Disney has made a lot a fantastic movies like The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and recently, Moana. However, despite these classics, there are quite a few movies that I feel are not talked about often. This is a shame because these movies are great! In this list, I have described ten Disney movies that deserve your time. I also decided to try to stay away from the princess films since most people seem to know those.
1. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Honestly, this 1996 movie is one of my favorite Disney movies, and it contains my favorite soundtrack. This is one of the darker Disney films, but it is so worth your time. This movie came out during the Renaissance era, but I feel this is the film out of that famous era that no one talks about. It does deal with more mature tones, but in this day of age, this movie is important.
2. Wreck-It Ralph
Disney's modern era has been great. You have movies like Frozen and Zooptopia, but Wreck-It Ralph gets left behind. This movie combines video game elements within it while having an original story. Also, the animation is beautiful.
3. A Goofy Movie
This movie has become sort of a cult classic for 90s kids. This movie is technically not in the official Disney line-up, but hey, it has Goofy in it, so it counts. This movie is about the father-and-son relationship between Goofy and Max, as they go on a road trip with each other. With great music and a touching story, this is a must watch.
4. Dinosaur
Okay, I remember playing this tape over and over as a kid. Considering Jurassic Park is my favorite movie, it is no wonder that I loved this movie. Even though I haven't watched it in a while, it is worth watching for the animation alone. Just look at it, it is so life like. It is so underappreciated it hurts.
5. The Rescuers
I think the sequel to this film is more popular than this one, but you have to watch the first one. The relationship between Bernard and Bianca is so adorable, and they have such a healthy relationship. You also get to see it grow, and they even get engaged in the sequel.
6. The Great Mouse Detective
Before Benedict Cumberbatch took the helm as Sherlock, Disney did their own version of the Sherlock Holmes stories. with Basil and Dr. Dawson, based on the series, Basil of Baker Street. This is actually the movie that helped Disney get back on top, and it marked the begin of the Disney Renaissance. With its action and mystery elements, it is a shame that is not remembered today.
7. Treasure Planet
Another early 2000s film to be forgotten, Treasure Planet is Disney's first attempt at science fiction, and I cannot think of another movie like it. This movie takes the classic story of Treasure Island and put it in space. With Star Wars now owned by Disney, people should look into this film.
8. The Fox and the Hound
Fun fact: my parents actually went on their first date to this movie. This movie is very sentimental for me. It's a touching piece about friendship between two characters who should hate each other. The world needs this movie now than ever.
9. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
My brother and I would watch this movie all the time as kids. This is an original story for Disney, and it takes a legend and creates an amazing movie. This film is also diverse with its characters.
10. Meet The Robinsons
Oh my god, please watch this movie. It's so incredibly touching and it has a great message. It also takes place in the future, so it is so cool to see how Disney sees the future.
Honorable Mention: The Princess and the Frog
I had a rule of using no princess movies, but I want to mention this movie. This is probably the last movie with Disney using the classic hand-made animation, and it is beautiful. I have talked to a lot of people who have not seen this movie, and it is such as shame because Tiana is awesome. She is probably one of my favorite princesses.
