10 Typical Sorority Stereotypes

Being in a sorority, one of the first questions you get asked is why you would join. People who don’t know what it is like being involved in a sorority/fraternity often look at you with the thoughts of all of the stereotypes out there. By joining a sorority, it is so much more than just socials and going out on the weekend; its about being involved in something bigger than yourself and creating friendships that’ll last for a lifetime. When I tell someone that I’m Greek, here a few of the stereotypes I get told.

“Sorority girls buy their friends.”

Being in a sorority is just like being in any other club, sports team or organization. We pay monthly dues but for good, resourceful things like sisterhood events and taking care of the house.

“Sorority girls don’t care about school.”

To be able to rush to join a sorority, you have to have a certain GPA. If you don’t maintain your GPA, you risk being put on probation which could lead to you missing events and possibly being kicked out of your sorority. Fraternities and sororities have some of the highest cumulative GPA’s on many college campuses.

“Sorority girls just party all the time.”

Many sorority girls are very passionate about many things and try to live life with a very high purpose, like academics and their philanthropies. Don’t get me wrong, some might go out every weekend, but there are things in this world that are bigger than your tab at the local bar.

“Sorority girls only date frat guys.”

Many of the girls in my chapter and girls in other chapters have boyfriends who are not in fraternities. I know some girls prefer guys who are involved in the Greek community, but I also know a lot of girls who prefer guys who are no where near the “typical frat guy”.

“Sorority girls don’t do anything worth being proud of.”

Sororities hold their own philanthropy events every year and raise a very large amount of money for their respected organization that they support. Each year members of the Greek community raise thousands of dollars for those who need it most.

“Sorority girls just sleep around and don’t want anything serious.”

Girls who are involved in sororities are just like any other girl in this world. Doesn’t every girl want a serious relationship with the man of their dreams? Many of the girls in my chapter are in serious, long term relationships.

“Sorority girls haze.”

If people did their research, they would find out that sororities are very against hazing. They have a zero-tolerance policy for hazing and if anyone feels even a little bit uncomfortable they are encouraged to tell someone right away.

“Sorority girls just care about their looks.”

It is highly encouraged to represent yourself, your school, and your chapter in the highest way that you can, but if a girl wants to wear sweatpants, a sweatshirt and greasy hair to class, no one is stopping her!

“All sorority girls are girly.”

Every chapter has a variety of girls who are unique in their own way. It doesn’t say anywhere that to be in a sorority you have to love the color pink and have your favorite drink be a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks.

“Sorority girls only talk to their sisters.”

Joining a sorority is just like joining a large family with 100+ sisters, so it's really easy for all of your friends to be in your sorority, but we all have friends who are in various chapters and who aren’t even involved in the Greek community at all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
