Bad Neighbours Movie

You meet so many new people everyday in college, it’s impossible to remember what everyone looks like or what their names are, but you will for sure remember the kinds of people you come across. Here’s a few types of people that I’ve come across throughout my first couple months here at the University of Iowa.

1. The Trendsetter

Whether you are at high school, college or work, there is always going to be that one person who is always dressed for success. Whether you see them walking around campus, studying at Starbucks or at that crazy frat party- you know they always have on the best outfits. Somehow they always get the new line of clothes before you even know about it- but hey, go them. Right when you see people like this, you immediately know you two have got to be best buds to borrow all their cute clothes.

2. The Partier

21 or not, you for sure will meet a few people who drink a little too much at the bars. These people always seem to be at the right place at the right time for every great party. No matter what day it is, you are sure to catch this person out and about having the time of their life. 8am class the next morning isn’t that important right? Whenever you go out, you are sure to run into this person- whether they remember it or not!

3. The Greeks

Ay Ay Alpha Phi! Whether you are walking around campus seeing greek letters at every corner, hearing the sorority girls scream during recruitment week or are overhearing details about the upcoming frat parties, you are sure to see greeks just about everywhere you go on college campuses. You can easily spot the greeks with the ever so famous Comfort Colors shirts, Sperrys and oversized tshirts. Who wouldn’t want to go greek??

4. The Rich Kid

Somehow this person seems to have everything. You will most likely see these people roll up to campus freshman year in a brand new corvette, the new iPhone7, and walking around like they own the school. These people know they are loaded and so does everyone else. As you may get jealous of all of their cool stuff, you know right when you see them that you have got to get on their good sides to get all the sweet perks, and maybe even a free ride to class in their sweet, new car!

5. The One Stuck in High School

As great as college is, there is always that one kid still stuck in high school. Constantly posting about the high school football team and going home almost every weekend to “visit the underclassmen”. You can easily spot these people wearing their old high school sweatshirts around campus, never shutting up about their high school’s new QB for the year and lastly, the most common, going back home to attend the high school dances. It’s cool to look back on the past and visit a couple weekends; but come on, it’s time to move on.

6. The Slacker

While everyone is a slacker at some point in college, you will for sure meet a few people who seem to always be doing nothing. You catch them in the dining hall everyday, but after the first week of 8am classes, they decided they would be sleeping in everyday from now on. The few times these people decide to show up to class you will probably hear lines like “Oh that was due today?” or “Wait, there’s a test today?”. You are going to come across people like this a lot in college, but just hope you don’t get stuck being partners with one of them for a group project!

7. The Social Media Girl

Pictures or it didn’t happen! No surprise to anyone, majority of college girls (and girls in general) love taking pictures. Whether it’s to post them on Instagram or hang them on your wall, it’s just something girls tend to do a lot. While all of that is completely normal for girls, there is always those girls who put a little too much thought into the pictures they post. Taking about 100 pictures until they have the perfect candid, spend another half hour picking the perfect edit (using the VSCO app of course) and then another 15 minutes trying to decide on the perfect caption. But hey, do it for the likes, right?

8. The One Who is Always Late

In college especially, naps are essential. But, sometimes that 20 minute power nap turns into a 3 hour slumber. You are going to meet many people that you are just going to have to accept that they will be at least 20 minutes late to everything you guys have planned. You can catch these people missing their 8am classes at least once a week, waking up late for tailgates and sleeping through dinner plans. As you get to know these people, it ends up just being a normal, casual thing for them to be strolling into lecture 20 minutes into class. While this may hurt them in the long run, it’s better to go late than never!

9. The Die Hard Football Fans

Being at a big school, calls for crazy football games. The die hard football fans are always the best people to run into. Nothing's better than game day walking down the streets seeing nothing but your school colors everywhere you go and tailgates at every corner. At big 10 schools especially, you won’t just see students- you will also see alumni, parents, and fans lining the stands at the games cheering on their favorite college team. These type of people will believe me when I say this- nothing is better than game day.

10. Your Best Friends

Last, but for sure not least, you are going to meet some of the greatest friends you will ever have. Senior year leaving your best friends is one of the hardest things ever, but in college you will meet a whole other group of friends that will become some of your best friends. Whether it is sorority sisters, teammates or your roommates- you know that these people will have your back no matter what. Hold on to these people, they may be your bridesmaids one day!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
