Gobble gobble - it's that time of year again! 'Tis the season for tables lined with rows of cranberry sauce, turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and apple pies. The endless food and family time, it's a time of thanks, and it's also a time of catching up between family members. Of course, this also means the endless questions and conversations that lead to speculation. Here's a list of 10 things you know you'll hear at the Thanksgiving table, but you're absolutely dreading to hear.
1. Politics:
Oh my word, this topic is inevitable. No matter how much we're each done with talking about the election and politics, it's always going to be a topic brought up this holiday. Yet, this is also a topic that should be avoided, simply because it's so controversial and we each have our own views (which we should all learn to respect each others opinions).
2. Boyfriends:
The ultimate question never fails to be asked, "Do you have a boyfriend yet?" and the answer remains the same, no. And it will most likely be a "no" until I bring the topic back up myself.
3. Life goals/ your studies:
"What are you majoring in?" and "Where do you want to go with that? What do you want to do with your life?" Honestly, you're all just as confused as I am. Adulting is hard, and I'm still trying to figure out the basics, so knowing exactly where I want to be in 10 years is a long shot of an answer.
4. "How are your classes going?"
It's break, so I'd really prefer not to talk about exams and classes. I don't want to think about all of the overwhelming work left at school while I'm relaxing at home.
5. Internships/ careers:
We're all out here trying to get internships and careers, and it's really hard. We don't want to be constantly reminded of this stress while we're on break.
6. Greek life/ clubs:
"Are you involved in Greek life? How about clubs? Is it taking away from your studies?" Yes, I'm involved in my fraternity and different clubs, and no it isn't taking away from my studies. In my mind, getting involved in the JMU community, as well as balancing schoolwork, is an awesome thing. It makes you a well-rounded person, giving you more opportunities aside from your grades.
7. Your health/ eating habits:
"Are you eating? What foods do you make?" Yes, of course, I'm eating. I can make the basics and, every now and then, my roommates and I like to get fancy and become Top Chef status.
8. "Have you gained/ lost weight?"
No, I'm still the same as I left. I'm perfectly healthy and living my life.
9. Coffee vs. Sleep:
I live off 2-3 cups of coffee a day, and get as much sleep as school allows me. All that matters is I'm living, thriving, and college is great.
10. You don't want to hear how much your family misses you, because you miss them just as much.
No matter how much I love living on my own at JMU, I always love to come back to my hometown and see my family.
