Interviews are always at least a little bit stressful, whether they are for a professional job, a part-time position at some convenience store, a spot in a student organization, and more. To make a solid impression in any interview, consider these steps.
1. Dress the part.
Think about where you are going and why you are being interviewed. If you are trying to become an intern for a business, go for slacks and a button down. If it is for a sales position at a trendy clothing boutique, wear something that shows your taste in fashion.
2. Do some research.
Learn some background of where you are interviewing and who you are interviewing with. This will show the interviewer that you are serious, that you care, and are prepared for anything.
3. Ask questions.
Usually, interviewers will ask you if you have anything you would like to ask them. Take this opportunity because it shows how interested you are in the position.
4. Be confident.
A firm handshake, eye contact, a bright smile, and excellent posture will demonstrate that you are there for a purpose and intend to reach a goal.
5. Make small talk.
Not so much that it distracts from the interview, but at the right time, length, and depth it breaks the ice and does a lot to calm your nerves.
6. Express some personality.
People like to see that you are an individual with your own characteristics. Give some sense of what you value in life, what you enjoy, and more.
7. Be honest.
If you do not have an answer for a question, you should say so. For example:
Interviewer: What is a time you had to deal with an upset costumer, and how did you solve the issue?
Applicant: I have actually never worked in a store before, but I am excellent at communicating with people and am confident in my ability of working towards a solution for any problem.
Honesty is always the best policy and is definitely something people look for in others.
8. Speak coherently.
It is not always easy, but avoid "uh, um, like," and long pauses. Using fillers such as those can leave the impression that you are unprepared, lack confidence in yourself, and do not care.
9. Display your strengths.
Make sure your strengths are relevant to the position and in good working order, and let them know that you are currently taking action to improve any weaknesses, and that those weaknesses do little to affect your work.
10. Let your goals be known.
People who have goals and aspirations tend to be people with who work hard, are dependable, and are motivated. These are the type of people others want to have around because it fosters productivity.
Take the best part of yourself and let it be known. With these tips, any interview will be your interview.
