Finals week is just around the corner, separating us from winter break and freedom to watch unlimited amounts of Netflix. Some of you may already be stressing, losing sleep, and procrastinating on studying. But it’s time to get focused and start studying if you haven’t already. Personally, I’ve survived four semesters of finals--so far, and I’m here to share some tips I’ve picked up on. Here are ten tips in order to survive finals:
1. Stay Hydrated
It’s extremely important to stay hydrated, drink a lot of water to prevent dehydration. Every once in a while drink some juice or Gatorade just to add in some extra sugar and electrolytes to keep you focused.
2. Don’t forget to eat
Whether it’s snacking or eating full meals, make sure you’re eating. At least eat a little something every few hours. Nothing is worse than becoming distracted by a growling stomach. Importantly, try and stay healthy to prevent stress eating.
3. Sleep
Students are notorious for not sleeping during finals week, but in order to function you need sleep. So sleep! Try and get at least eight hours of sleep per night, it’ll help retain your memory and improve your final score.
4. Exercise
If you get stressed out easily, exercise. Go to the gym, take a walk, do something to clear your mind for a little bit. It’s extremely important to find time to clear your mind during this stressful period.
5. Start studying early
More than likely, you’ll have a bunch of papers and assignments due around the same time. Start reviewing material early to prevent procrastination and a huge pile of assignments.
6. Study in a quiet space
It’s a lot easier to study if you’re in a quiet space. Someplace without TV access or loud distractions. Personally, my favorite place to study is the school library; minimum noise and distractions guaranteed.
7. Take Breaks
Every once in a while it’s okay to take a break. Whether it’s 15 minutes or an hour, take a small break in between studying to clear your mind and to ease the stress.
8. Put your phone on silent
One of the biggest distractions are cell phones, easy access to social media and quick communication. Put your phone on silent to prevent a huge distraction. Don’t pick your phone up unless it’s absolutely necessary.
9. Prioritize your time
Studying is important, but it’s also important to carry on your ordinary routine and priorities. Prioritize your time and make sure you’re fitting in time for other activities. It’ll help relieve the stress, and get your brain to cool down for a few hours.
10. Reward yourself
In the end, make sure you treat yourself. After a stressful week, reward yourself for all your hard work and getting through finals week. You deserve it!
Happy Finals! Good luck!
