Move-in day can be one of the most stressful days of the year. However, with a few tips and a little help, you can make it a great start to an amazing semester!
1. Don't Over Pack
The worst thing you can do on move in day is over pack. You want to spend most of the day getting to know everyone or reuniting with old friends if you are a returning student, not unpacking three boxes of clothes.
2. Bring Friends And Family Along
Not only does the grunt work seem to go by quicker with a little help, but move-in day is a great chance for photo opportunities and memory making!
3. Get There Early
No matter what time you start moving in, there is going to be a huge crowd. However, if you get there early, you will at least be able to get finished and be able to enjoy the evening's events and not still be carrying boxes.
4. Be Prepared For Crowds
Yes, move-in day is absolutely crazy and the dorms are overflowing with commotion. There are people everywhere, you can hardly hear, and it feels like you are a little fish in a huge sea. Breathe easy and relax. After this day, the halls calm down by 95%.
5. Make Multiple Smaller Trips
If you live relatively close to your school, instead of moving everything in on move-in day, consider moving in only your essentials. Then as you go home to visit you can slowly take back things you want and return things home that you really didn't need.
6. Bring Your Own Moving Equipment
Any type of cart, moving dolly or even lifting straps can make a huge difference. Some schools provide moving equipment but it can be really limited so try to bring your own!
7. Dress Comfortable
Move-in day for most schools is still during the hottest part of the year. That accompanied by the fact that you are going to be carrying, unpacking, and repeating over and over means that you are going to get hot and tired. Save that cute dress and heels for the Week of Welcome events.
8. Stay Hydrated
Along with dressing for the weather, make sure to stay hydrated. When doing that much lifting and moving it is very possible to get sick from the heat. Grab yourself a water bottle and make sure to treat your body right.
9. Contact Roommates Beforehand
One of the most nerve-racking parts of move-in day is meeting new roommates. Many schools have your roommates emails or possibly even their cell phone numbers listed in your roommate information. Take advantage of it and send them a quick introduction to cut down on that first day tension.
10. Be Ready For Tears
Move-in day is a very emotional time whether it's your first year or not. Be ready for multiple hugs, possible crying sessions, and the overwhelming feeling that a new year is about to begin. But don't worry. You got this.
