10 Times My Parents Were Right All Along

With great power, comes great responsibility. Now that we are adults, we all have the greatest power of all. The power of choice. Now we do not have to listen to our overbearing parents. It is a free country, and in a free country, we can do whatever we want. My parents have always tried to limit my activities or give me some sort of moral life lesson. Which, by the way, I never followed. Of course, sometimes, things don't always turn out as we planned and that's when we realize that our parents were right all along.

1. Don't eat too many sweets.

We all love sweets, whether it's candy, chocolate or the ever popular jumbo jet puffed marshmallows. They are delicious, but sometimes you can have too many. And I have personally experienced this phenomenon. All good things should be enjoyed in moderation, for example, five marshmallows every now and then can be great, but when you try an entire bag, well, let's just say every time you see a marshmallow you get traumatic flashbacks.

2. Don't play with your food.

Sometimes eating can be a boring activity. That's why you gotta spice it up. There are many ways you can spice up your eating life. you can try and do challenges or you make art out of it. Some of these activities may be more dangerous than the other. For example, if you happen to have 17 cheese balls in your mouth, it gets hard to chew, talk or breathe because your friends may start laughing, which in turn, makes you laugh as well. This is a potential choking hazard, so you may or may not die. Remember, safety first, kids.

3. Learn how to cook.

Cooking is an essential life skill. Sometimes a bowl of cereal or Eggos can't cut it and you need real food, like a paella or something. College is the first step we take into the real world. With this, we must learn how to cook, it has many uses. It can feed you, which is a big plus because you need to eat to live. Other positives include impressing that one lady or man with your cooking or maybe winning that one "Iron Chef" contest you were thinking about entering.

4. Take good care of your pets.

Having a pet is a big responsibility. You have to feed them and groom them and all that jazz. Sometimes accidents can happen, which could lead to the kidnapping of one of your pets. In this case, my owls, Eugene and Eunice, pictured above, were kidnapped. This was a devastating blow to my psyche. Thankfully, I was able to get Eugene back, but Eunice is still out there, alone and scared, but I will find her one day. There is nothing more heartbreaking than losing your companions, so be sure to take good care of your pets. If the kidnapper of Eunice is reading this, just know that I will find you.

5. Don't be afraid to get a job.

School is already a tough enough job as is, so why should we get a job on campus? Well as I soon realized, being a poor college student is not just a phenomenon – it's a real thing. So, I got a job to earn some cash. There are many opportunities to find work on campus and hours are very flexible. Eating out is no longer a dream when you have a job.

6. Don't be afraid to quit your job.

As stated before, school is already a job, so why have two, am I right? Sure, having extra cash is always a plus, but sometimes, you have to think about what's more important, working till 3 a.m. in the morning or study for that accounting exam. College is about figuring out which L to take. And sometimes that means only working for a month before quitting because of the awful hours. You win some, you lose some.

7. Don't say no to late night adventures.

When you're older, you're not gonna remember all the quizzes and exams you took in college, you're gonna remember all the times when you and the boys (or girls) bonded over random trips or what have you. This previous semester, I received a text on Sunday night asking me if I wanted to go to Chicago. I did not even hesitate, I accepted immediately. The trip was quite possibly my favorite memory of college so far. It was filled with shenanigans and much more.

8. Don't be afraid to talk to that one girl or guy.

Miami is a beautiful school full of beautiful people. So when someone might be hitting on you, don't be afraid to go and talk to them. Who knows, they could be your Miami merger or a friend. Endless possibilities. The worst thing that can happen is if they say no, and even then, that's not so bad. There's nowhere else to go, but up. Also, miss girl, if you are reading this, hit me up.

9. Start planning for the future.

Despite what you may think, college is quite short. You know what they say, time flies when you're having fun and now that I am junior, I realize that I should start thinking of life after college. As of this post, I still have no idea what I want to do. I have many potential directions I can head, the only thing is figuring out which path I should take. You don't want to make the wrong decision, so be sure you are dead set on what you want to do when the time comes.

10. Don't forget that friendship is above all.

At the end of the day, your friends will always be there for you. Whether you are sad or happy, they will be right there with you. In life, there are two things, family and friends. You can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends, and that is one of the biggest decisions you can make in your life. So be sure to let your friends know that you love them.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.

What's up Asshat,

I've composed a list of things that I wish upon you, and they're harsh and cruel. These things are things that I wouldn't wish upon my worst of enemies, not even that Starbuck's barista who always screws up my order, not even him. You fall into a whole other category of hate. You surpass Starbucks barista. Congratulations, I'm actually a pretty nice person, making you worthy of every single bit of torture I wish upon you. What are these things I wish upon you you might ask?
