10 Thoughts Of College First-Years, As Told By 'Riverdale'
The CW

I, like the majority of recent high school graduates, plan to move to college for the very first time in a few days. Needless to say, I'm having a whirlwind of emotions and it's proven more difficult to keep a steady head with each passing day.

My thoughts range from the dread to waking up for my 8 a.m. class to the thrill of participating in the Week of Welcome activities at Carolina. Just like the hit series Riverdale, my new life will be filled with new and possibly confusing friendships, unexpected drama and a whole lot of decision-making.

Whether you connect with Jughead's inability to fit in with his community or with Josie's pressure to meet her parents' high standards, the cast of Riverdale has a way of relating to every incoming first-year. Thus, I have compiled a list of ten thoughts all college first-years have before moving in, as told by your favorite comic book stars:

1. "I'm sad because I have to leave my family, friends, and most importantly, my bed behind. :-("

The summer before your first year of college can become depressing as you say goodbye to the people in your life who shared every moment with you for at least the past four years.

2. "I'm so excited to meet new people and experience all college has to offer!"

Nevertheless, you are dreaming about the wonderful opportunities you'll have of forming friendships with people other than those you went to high school with.

3. "I'm low-key terrified of meeting new people and what if I somehow end up alone on campus with no sense of direction and oh the possibilities of mishaps are endless!!"

On the other hand, you can feel that pit at the bottom of your stomach that warns you about everything that could go wrong. Getting stuck on the elevator during move in and getting to your first class of the semester late are only a couple of your worries.

4. "I definitely overpacked. But wait, I forgot my headphones!"

Like me, you'll probably want to bring every article of clothing (including your winter boots) and every fond high school memory with you at the start of the fall semester. However, try to restrain yourself because just as I am reassuring myself, I can guarantee you that you won't have the time or space for it all.

5. "I can't wait for the free gear and food on campus. College is so expensive."

Before you even step foot on campus, you probably already started complaining about the sheer amount of money it takes to attend college. But, you also know that during the first few days of arriving, you'll already have more t-shirts than you can count (or so every other returning student has told you).

6. "There are going to be so many cool clubs...but everyone told me 'beware the listserv' so I won't sign up for all of them."

During orientation, you might have gotten the spiel about getting involved on campus, which includes signing up for clubs at the beginning of the term. However, your orientation leader also warned you about being added to the listserv, which means you would receive constant emails throughout the school year from about 800 clubs if you aren't mindful. I guess there are pros and cons to every situation.

7. "I'm definitely doing ~insert bizarre university tradition here~ the night before FDOC because I WILL get a 4.0 this semester."

At some institutions, there are unique traditions that live on year after year with each new class to prepare its students for the upcoming year. For example, at Carolina, the night before or the morning of the first day of classes, students drink from the Old Well to finish with a 4.0 at the end of the semester. There's no guarantee that it'll work, but it's a great way to bond with fellow peers and get pumped up for learning.

8. "I can do this. I'll ace Chemistry 101 while having a social life and getting enough sleep."

As a rising first-year, I currently have this mentality because if I could do it in high school, I can do it in college, right? First-years tend to be more motivated right from the get go because first impressions are everything, especially if you might want that grade bumped up at the end of the semester.

9. "FREEDOM AT LAST!!"

Ah, freedom. You're finally able to do what you want when you want (within reason) without your parents' glares on your back 24/7. It's a very rewarding idea that also comes with a lot of adulting, unfortunately, that you might not be prepared for. Another pro-con situation.

10. "I'm ready to watch season two of Riverdale in October!"

If you're anything like me, you're stoked to watch the next season of Riverdale with your equally-as-excited friends.

Riverdale season two will air on October 8 at 8/7 central on the CW. You can watch season one on Netflix today! Happy move-in, fellow first-years!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
