I’ll never forget my first barre class. I showed up early, bought some “professional” barre socks, filled up my water bottle, and then headed into class. I was excited, and eager to try this new workout that I had been hearing such great things about. The class started, and five minutes in I was struggling, and by struggling, I mean I could barely keep up. I powered through, and continued attending classes, since it counted for a school credit.
After committing myself to barre, I’ve found it to be a great workout, especially for strength, core stability, and balance. I’ve finally realized that barre is only rewarding if you continue to persevere; it takes a lot mental willpower to push yourself past what you think you are capable of. Here are ten thoughts most people have during every class:
1. OK, I’m ready for this!
2. Maybe I’ll bump up a weight level, I’m feeling good today.
3. Okay, definitely shouldn’t have done that.
4. I never knew my quads could burn this badly.
5. Or that my legs could shake this much.
6. Am I doing this right?
7. Okay, my whole body is shaking uncontrollably.
8. I hate this.
9. Only five more minutes to go, I can do this.
10. OMG, best workout ever; I’m so going back tomorrow!
