10 Thoughtful Gifts for Elderly Relatives this Holiday Season

Finding thoughtful presents for seniors can be a challenge at times. After all, many older adults own a surplus of items and have specific tastes. It can be more challenging if they insist that they do not want a gift, as so many senior citizens do when they don't want to be a burden.

However, there are numerous ways to make an elderly relative feel unique. This article contains thoughtful gift suggestions for older folks, including parents, grandparents, and even those difficult-to-shop-for individuals who have everything. Read on to learn how to make a senior's day magical.

A Robot Vacuum That Collects Dirt and Dust

A robot vacuum cleaner that uses Wi-Fi to function and has self-charging capabilities is a wonderful gift for someone who struggles with vacuuming (or who doesn't enjoy it!). Robot vacuums work on all floors, including carpets, tiles, and laminate.

Family Photo Book

A custom photo album is a great way to display memorable images or occasions so your seniors can look back on them whenever they want. For a person with Alzheimer's or dementia, make a personalized book that they will enjoy reading by adding introductory text to photos or graphics that they enjoy.

Mixbook offers a platform for you to create light and flexible photo books and offer them as a present for elderly relatives.

Games

Games are a great way to keep the mind active while having fun. Fun activity suggestions include Sudoku, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, a playable card set, adult coloring pages, video games, and paint-by-number publications.

Families that enjoy playing cards will appreciate an automatic card shuffler. It is beneficial for seniors and card players of all ages. Even if they use it only when you're visiting, a card shuffler is a great gift for older relatives who have everything. However, youngsters also enjoy using it, making it a convenient present for the young and the elderly.

Gift Certificate

Many older individuals prefer experiences to tangible items. Think about giving them a gift certificate for something they'll like.

●A gift card to a preferred restaurant: They can eat a delicious meal you provide for them, or if you're nearby, arrange a date to go out to a nice meal together.

●A gift certificate for personal treatment, such as a massage, manicure, or pedicure. Set a date to escort your loved one to an appointment if you're nearby. Even some spas have specialized massages for seniors!

A Pill Organizer

As people age, it becomes harder to remember which drugs to take at a particular time, but pill organizers can assist. You can organize a day's worth, a week's worth, or a month's worth of prescriptions and set up an alarm to remind your loved one to take their meds. Look for a model with compartments that are simple to open.

Non-Slip Socks

What about a present that blends style and utility? An older person's feet can stay warm and protected from slips and falls by wearing a good pair of non-slip socks. Both men and women can choose from a wide variety of hues and designs.

Massage Pillow

Warm massages are the best way to relieve a sore back or neck. An elderly family member who suffers from the typical aches and pains associated with aging can find solace in a heated massage pillow.

Help Cover Some Bills

Even a slight reduction in monthly payments will help alleviate some stress for your elderly loved one. Consider paying their TV or phone bill for one month or arrange a lengthier payment plan with other family members. Prepaid gas cards might be a practical gift if they own a car.

Fitness Gifts

Many at-home exercise products are available to aid seniors in maintaining their general health and having fun. Examples of fantastic presents for seniors' low-impact activities include lightweight dumbbells weighing 2 or 4 pounds, Pilates mats, elastic bands, and water containers.

A Day Clock

For older adults with dementia or memory problems, having a clock that shows the date and time of day can be pretty helpful. Most of the "Alzheimer's clock" versions feature extra-large displays for seamless viewing, and some even let you change the brightness.

Practicality and functionality are crucial components of a present for many senior citizens. Sentimentality is still a factor when buying presents for parents and grandparents. You can put a smile on their faces if you can think of something that will make their lives simpler, healthier, or more enjoyable.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
