If you work or have ever worked in a pharmacy you've probably experienced these 10 moments almost every day.
1. A customer comes to pick up a prescription for another person but doesn't know the patient's address, birthday, or any information about the patient but still insists on getting the medication.
2. A patient drops off a prescription and assumes we know their insurance information even if they've never filled with us before.
3. A patient drops off a prescription and is told it's going to be 45 minutes and comes back to pick up their prescription 15 minutes later.
4. A patient brings 20 medications to be refilled and says they are going out of town in 20 minutes and needs them immediately.
5. A patient insists they picked up their medication on a specific day, even though the computer tells us exactly what date the prescription was picked up.
6. A patient comes to pick up their prescriptions and states "I'd like to pick up my prescriptions" and does not mention their name or birthdate.
7. A patient tells you they need to refill any prescriptions that can be refilled and they have a list of prescriptions exactly 2 miles long.
8. A patient asks what prescription is available for pickup and you have to best guess how to pronounce the medication name without embarrassing yourself.
9. You are trying to type in a prescription and you can't read the patient's name because of the doctor's handwriting.
10. You receive a prescription and you can't tell who the doctor is because of the signature and there are 22 other doctors in the same building.
Even though working in a pharmacy can be a stressful job, it is very rewarding. Every day you learn about new medications, drug interactions, and how to properly pronounce medications. While working in a pharmacy, you grow close to your coworkers as well as your regular patients. Your coworkers become your pharmacy family and your patients become your friends.
