10 Things You'll Understand If Your Best Friend Is Your Neighbor

It's the ultimate type of best friend.

Having a best friend who also happens to live down the street from you is quite the blessing. For starters, it means that you’ll always have someone to hang out with when you’re home and bored (and you don’t even have to call or text them; you can just look out your window to see if their car is in the driveway). It also means that curfews don’t really exist because it takes you about 30 seconds to get home.

If you’re as lucky as me to have your best friend (or best friends) live in the same neighborhood as you, you’ll be able to relate to this:

1. Her food is your food.

If you don’t feel like eating anything in your own house, there’s no need to whine or complain because you can simply walk down the block and see what your best friend has (this also means that whenever you decide to get crafty and bake or cook something, you never have to worry about not having all of the ingredients because they’re bound to be in your best friend’s pantry).

2. Her clothes are your clothes.

Similarly to food, you never have to worry about running out of clothes! If you start to feel like you’ve been wearing the same shirt over and over again, you can easily run over to your best friend’s house and see what she has in her closet.

3. You never have to go shopping alone.

Whether it’s to the mall, to the grocery store, or to target, you never go unaccompanied. That’s because you both are likely to show up in front of each other’s house, unannounced, and drag each other along, whether you like it or not.

4. Hangouts are never planned.

There’s none of that back and forth texting, letting each other know when you’re on your way or when you have arrived. Most of the time, you just walk on over whenever you have some free time (in my case, we don’t even have to knock–the door is always open and we actually get yelled at if we do knock).

5. There is no absurd time to hangout.

Because you live in such close proximity, it’s not uncommon to get together just before midnight and stay together well into the early morning. Sure, sometimes your parents will get mad, but at least they never have to pick you up from their house in the middle of the night.

6. You’re comfortable doing basically anything together.

When you see each other all the time, there is no need to always have something exciting on the agenda. Sometimes, you will go to their house and end up taking a nap–or you’ll wind up cleaning their room with them. In fact, it’s actually quite rare for you guys to actually have something to do/somewhere to be.

7. She is your ride to most places.

If you happen to share a friend group, you know you can always count on her to drive you wherever your plans may lead. Saves time and gas!

8. If you’re feeling sad, you always have somewhere to go.

Whether it’s in the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night, you’re there for each other in an instant and, more often than not, already have the ice cream and junk food ready.

9. Her family is your second family.

You know that you’ll always be invited to family dinners, family barbecues, and even family vacations.

10. Distance is never an issue.

Even if you both go away for college, you know that you’ll be seeing each other every time you come home because the moment you pull into your driveway, her house is the first place you go.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
