10 Things You'll Hear And See About Gymnastics Before The Olympics

So 2016 is an Olympic year, meaning that gymnastics is going to be coming back into the spotlight before we know it! Last weekend was the Secret U.S. Classic, at the end of June is the P&G Championships and in the beginning of July is the U.S. Olympic Trials. Since most people have been out of the loop for the past few years, here is what you should get prepared for in the two months leading up to Rio!

1. The storylines.

You'll mostly hear about injuries (such as Maggie Nichols and Bailie Key) and deaths in the family (like John Orozco), which automatically make you root for these athletes even more than you already have.

2. The "rivalries."

I guarantee that Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles will be pitted against each other until the Olympics are over, but Simone herself stated the other day that the so called "rivalry" between them is fueled by the media alone. Yes, Gabby is a household name and very well-known, but I can promise you that Simone will soon be as well.

3. Parents.

Who can forget Aly Raisman's parents during London 2012? But honestly, I do the same thing when I watch gymnastics so you can't blame them.

4. Cringe-worthy commentary.

You'll have to wait and hear it for yourself honestly.

5. The comebacks.

This is referring to Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas (members of the Fierce Five from London 2012) who have made a comeback into elite gymnastics and are favorites to make the Olympic team for Rio this year.

6. "New scoring."

It's been around for almost a decade now, but in the minds of everyone who pictures the Perfect 10, this is quite different. Along with the execution score (which is what the Perfect 10 has been) is a difficulty score based on the difficulty of skills performed. NBC helps out with some colorful shapes to help people understand the scoring, but after watching a few competitions, you'll get the gist.

7. Sparkles.

The leotards at Classics were just so sparkly (which I, of course, absolutely loved) and I'm expecting nothing less at Championships.

8. Tighter hairstyles.

Gone are the days of the McKayla Maroney bun because hair must now be neat and tidy. However, you'll most definitely still see scrunchies and bows to coordinate with the leotards.

9. Martha Karolyi.

Martha is in charge of selecting the Olympic team, and she is always watching the girls. Her approval means everything.

10. Incredible gymnastics.

And of course, you will most definitely see absolutely incredible gymnastics from the best gymnasts in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
