10 Things You Will Be Surprised To Learn In College

College is a time of growth, change, and new, possibly uncomfortable, experiences. As a sophomore in college, here is a list of 10 things I have learned so far:

Your freedoms and boundaries: You will have the opportunity to investigate what it means to have freedom and the responsibility that comes with it.

Your study habits and management: Within the first weeks of the term, you will discover the value of time and the pain of procrastination.

Your true character: When you are put into a new environment and group of friends, you will have the chance to reinvent yourself, whether stylistically or personality-wise.

Your level of functionality and tolerance: You will most likely experience an unexpected, but much needed, breakdown (or multiple breakdowns) in your dorm room or in the office of your favorite professor.

Your health, spirituality, and everything in between: With all the pressure that comes your way, sooner or later you will realize it is “okay not to be okay.” Life is tough and everyone around you is just as stressed navigating their own lives.

Your inner emotions: There will be a moment in the semester when you will desperately miss home and your family more than you will want to acknowledge. Sometimes a call to a family member is just what you need.

Your worth: You will realize grades, test scores, and your final GPA do not define you as a person. Try your best, but do not become overwhelmed by the mindset of “my grades will make or break me.”

Your power with words: You will learn the importance of, and correct way to, advocate for yourself when wronged or disagree.

Your ability to be a team player: You will master the art of compromise (some examples include: group projects and sharing space with your roommate).

Your wild side: You will learn how to live in the moment and be spontaneous. There will be times when you will tire of all the projects and assignments. You will discover the value of taking a break and going on a late-night fast food run during an all-nighter.

With these silly and serious lessons in mind, college has been one of the greatest decisions and journeys of my life. To be in an environment where we all strive for a better future is exciting to experience. The people I meet, the professors who devote their time for me, and the life lessons I have received are some of the best memories and conversations I will have for a lifetime.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
