10 Things You Should Never Do In Life

Don't learn the hard way, and avoid the things that you should never do in life.

10 Things You Should Never Do In Life
Matheus Ferrero

Not every lesson in life should be learned the hard way; that’s why you should say never to many things.

It’s better to know these things sooner than later.

1. Never try smoking.

Why would you ever smoke? In my opinion, this is one of the most stupid things any human being can do to themselves. If you smoke, you’re slowly killing yourself.

2. Never ignore your parents.

They made who you are, they supported you financially for many years, and gave you emotional support when you needed it. Parents deserve the outmost respect and praise, forever.

3. Never let anyone control your life.

Wonder why they call it “your life?” Don’t let anyone or anything control it. Ultimately, you are the master of it, and the author of your life; it’s not worth giving the power to someone else. Also, think about the things that are controlling your day-to-day, it’s not always people that control us, but other things such as social media, technology, and bad habits.

4. Never avoid your health.

Try to live as long as possible, and there is no better way to do this than being healthy. We should strive to be healthy in every aspect of our lives; physically, mentally and emotionally. Feeling good is truly an investment.

5. Never put work over family or friends.

I’m not saying to skip work over a party, but make sure you work when you must, and share time with family and friends when you should. Don’t procrastinate so that when you have a social gathering you have to miss it do to work. Strive for a balance in your work and social life.

6. Never spend more than you earn.

It may sound ridiculous, but you would be surprised to know how many people spend more than they earn. Never disregard saving money and investing in your future, you should spend smart and wise. Economist Harold Pollack once said that every financial advice anyone needs, can be neatly fit on an index card.

7. Never be judgmental.

You never know what kind of battle someone is having, and you might never know the entire story behind someone’s actions. Try to understand before judging.

8. Never forget who helped you in tough times.

Real friends are those who help you when you need it the most, don’t forget about them, they are the ones you want to keep forever. Occasionally, a stranger might help you with something, or a professor might help you with a project; don’t forget these small things, be grateful and pay it back.

9. Never quit your dreams.

But remember, you have to work three times harder in order to achieve them. If your “dream” gives a purpose to your life, why quit? If you don't have a dream to pursue, now is the time to seat down and write about something you want to achieve.

10. Never be materialistic.

Don’t obsess over stuff money can buy, but pursue does things that it can. Love a lot, smile a lot, have true friends, love your family. Nonetheless, it’s always important to have a healthy relationship with money; don’t let it rule you.

In the end, the adage of “never say never” is very wrong. Trust me, you can say never whenever you want, specially to these points mentioned above.

So, are you going to say never?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
