10 Things You Know If You've Lived In Portland, OR

Despite its quirks, or perhaps because of them, the City of Roses is pretty great.

10 Things You Know If You've Lived In Portland, OR

1. The Unipiper

Man riding a unicycle, playing flaming bagpipes and perhaps dressed up as Darth Vader? Just a normal day in downtown Portland.

2. Bicycles. Everywhere.

Lots of people bike around town, but Portlanders take it to the next level. We have a steadfast cohort of bike commuters but lets not forget the Bridge Pedal, the double-decker bikers and most importantly, the World Naked Bike Ride.

3. Hiking

It's just what you do on weekends, duh.

4. Food Carts

Fast, cheap and delicious, what more could you want? Portlanders made food carts cool. I’m not talking about those hot dog and peanut stands in Manhattan they call food carts. Our carts serve tacos, gyros, dal, curry, crepes—you name it. Plus, we have whole blocks of them!

5. Powell's Books

“The world’s largest independent bookstore” doesn’t even encapsulate the magic that is Powell’s. Seriously, even if you hate books, you can’t deny that there’s something relaxing about wandering through the quiet maze of shelves.

6. Hipsters

Glasses, beards, flannel shirts… yup we got 'em.

7. The Food Scene

Portlanders like to keep up to date with the latest food and drink trends, particularly when they involve craft beer, fancy coffee or anything “free range” or “grass fed.”

8. Voodoo Doughnuts and Salt & Straw Aren't As Good As Everyone Seems to Think

I mean, they're not bad, but is it really worth the line when there are other places that are just as good? Try Tonalli’s or Blue Star for donuts and Cool Moon and Ruby Jewel for ice cream.

9. Fountains

I’ve never been to a city with so many large public fountains that people are allowed to climb into.

10. This picture

My dad took this picture on his way to work. It's just so Portland!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
