Now that it's 2016 the mid-2000s seem like they were so long ago. But when it was brought to my attention the other day that Monsters Inc. was almost fifteen years old and Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" came on the radio during the "What was popular in the early 2000s" block I had to sit down and reevaluate my life. These things though trivial were all part of my awkward middle school phase and was almost shocking to realize how long they've been around.
1. Facebook and Twitter
Now it wasn't immediately popular in 2006, Facebook and twitter were just starting out. Most of us were still in the swing of the Myspace days (We don't talk about the Myspace days), but Facebook and Twitter launched and we see just how popular it is today! I'm sure you can find some pretty cringe-worthy stuff from around this time.
2. The Nintendo Wiiand Playstation 3
These two huge household names were released in 2006. It's hard to believe 10 years ago we were awkwardly swinging the Wii-motes, forgot to put on the strap and ended up breaking the TV trying to play virtual sports. And the PlayStation 3 was the first console to feature Blu-ray because that was still super new at the time. (The Xbox 360 came out in November of 05 making it just a tad bit older than the 06 releases, but it's still technically 10 years old!)
3. “High School Musical”
We were all in this together, but now it's been 10 years since it happened, the cast of HSM are far beyond the days of the Disney channel. Not to mention most of the cast would be featured as adults with solid 9-5 jobs if they were to make a fourth installment of the film.
4. Steve Irwin's Death
It's hard to believe that The Crocodile Hunter himself has been gone for 10 years. We're still not over it, and we will never like sting rays as long as we live.
5. “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Click,” “300” and “Step Up” were released
These three movies are iconic films that came from that year and I'm sure you've seen all of them at least once. These movies are quoted pretty constantly and are very easy to go back and watch again, over and over.
7. “That 70's Show,” “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Arrested Development” aired their final episodes
All good things must come to an end, but thank goodness these classics are still on Netflix. We all feel a little tug in our heart when a series ends and “Arrested Development” was cancelled due to its poor ratings at the time (What!).
8. Rihanna had just released her second album and Taylor Swift had just released her first
You might need a moment but "Teardrops on my Guitar" is 10 years old, now there are tear drops on my keyboard. T. Swift was still an up and coming country artist and Rihanna had just broken into the scene and hits like "S.O.S" and "Unfaithful" were tearing up the charts. It feels like these songs were on the radio like a month ago.
9. “Gears of War,” “Kingdom Hearts II,” “Pokémon Diamond and Pearl,” and the “Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” came out
Some of the most iconic games that came out of the year. Twilight Princess was the last game released for the Nintendo GameCube, Pokémon was still super popular being in the fourth generation, “Gears of War” had just become the newest big franchise on the market and “Kingdom Hearts” had just released a sequel bringing back the “Final Fantasy” and Disney characters we know and love to defeat evil.
10. Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, and Aeropostale were super popular
Now this is speculation since the trend reached different areas at different times, but between 2003 and 2007 these brands were at some of the highest point of sales and everyone was wearing their logos all over the place. Sometimes you can still cringe when you think about it.
