10 Things To Do In Providence This Winter

Now that it’s getting to the end of the year – I know, I can’t believe it either – it brings us to another season. The winter is my personal favorite, layers of clothes meaning better outfits, hot cocoa, spending time in cafes, and ice skating. Many different events and activities come about in each different season, but now it’s time to enjoy this long winter. Here are 11 events and activities to do for the rest of this season in the country’s creative capital, Providence, Rhode Island!

1. 5th Annual Christmas WaterFire

WaterFire is Providence’s very own event. With sparkling bonfires on providence’s river, it is a great non-profit event to promote the arts and the city’s cultural life. The 5th Annual Christmas WaterFire benefits and showcases the incredible work of the Providence Rescue Mission! This is all thanks to an anonymous donor. This event will begin in Waterplace Park at sunset on Friday, December 18.

2. Duck and Bunny Wickeden Wonderland

Duck and Bunny is located on Wickeden Street in the East side, famous for many artsy shops, cafes, and many different small boutiques. This year, Triple Threat restaurant, bar, and tea room is hosting an event Monday, December 21 at 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. This is a gift show & fundraiser holiday extravaganza featuring their favorite treats, local art, and cocktails.

3. Alex and Ani City Center

Ice skating is such an essential activity to do during the winter -- good thing downtown Providence has that just for you. The ice skating center is open from late November to March, just enough time to make a day of it!

4. Aurora Jazz Jam Session

As we have stated before, Providences is a city full of creativity and authenticity, however, these events in Aurora Bar bring something new to Providence. This session gives an opportunity for locals to connect and vibe out with each other. Jazz Jam sessions run December 5 to April 1 on the every second Wednesday of each month!

5. Trinity Repertory

Rhode Island’s holiday tradition commences once again this season. "The Christmas Carol" is about Ebenezer Scrooge, a greedy, sour businessman wicked for his lack of Christmas cheer. When three ghosts show up, Scrooge is given the chance to rethink his life. He begins to change his ways and is wholly transformed by the spirit of Christmas. This play is perfect for the whole family during the holiday season!

"The Heidi Chronicles" is about a girl in her “coming of age” during the peak of second-wave feminism. As she grows up, she begins to idolize a good liberal baby boomer expectation, career, family and an equal partner. This is a story through the eyes of women.

6. ArtProv Gallery

ArtProv is a gallery located in downtown Providence and displayscontemporary art and a collection of works centered around color, texture, and expression by local, national, and international artists. ArtProv Gallery is hosting a holiday art show and sale feature artists such as Jane Andreozzi, Judy Araujo Volkmann, Nick Paciorek, Alecia Barry Underhill, Marjorie Hellman, Eleanor Rahim, and Suzanne Hill.

Giving our school some credit, it’s important to support our team even during break. On December 10, the hockey team is facing our city’s very own Brown University at home.

9. Concerts

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
