10 Things We ALL Need To Work On In 2017

Not resolutions, just areas of our lives where we're lacking.

Okay, I know you’ve probably seen like a hundred million articles about New Year’s resolutions and goals, and even more about how to make 2017 better than any other year of your life to date. But to be honest, I don’t care about your new weight loss routine, or your resolution to start reading the bible. I think that if you wanted to do these things, you wouldn’t be waiting for a new January to start doing them. So, these things aren’t really resolutions or goals, they’re like guidelines for how to improve as a species. Because let’s face it, the human race has been failing in some respects for the past few thousand years.

1. Stop pretending crocs are cute or cool.

Unless you are a 10 year old at a swim meet, burn them.

2. Same goes for Birkenstocks.

Let’s leave extremely overpriced, extremely underwhelming shoes in 2016.

3. Learn how to drive.

We all “know” how to drive, but let’s stop being so god awful on the roads. There’s truly no good reason to be aggressive and crazy while driving a huge metal death trap.

4. Start embracing technology and social media and quit acting like Twitter is ruining your life.

I’m so over hearing about how I’m ruining my own life because I like tweeting things about my life and looking at pictures of golden retrievers on Instagram.

5. Wear sunscreen. Like, all the time.

I just feel like this is important.

6. Get rid of the notion that women are worth less when they’re sexualized.

Surprise! I can do/wear whatever I want and still be brilliant and funny and have lots and lots of worth. Also: it’s perfectly acceptable for me to be sexualized, as long as I’m consenting to it. Sexuality is not an evil disease, and it does not affect my personality.

7. Recycle

Just because our future president doesn’t believe in global warming, doesn’t mean it’s not a real thing!

8. Can we please stop acting like Seth Rogen is funny?? Come on.

Sausage Party was one of humanity’s biggest downfalls in 2016, and that says a lot considering that it was the year of the election of a orange-faced rapist as President

9. Push for more all-inclusive fashion/beauty brands!

Last year, CoverGirl featured a woman in a hijab, as well as a teenage boy in their makeup ads. Plus sized and disabled models have started walking in runway fashion shows. I LOVE this, and we should all be pushing for this trend to keep spreading.

10. Start flossing. And wear your retainer, because we both know that you don’t. Teeth are important, let’s start treating them that way.

This sounds like a resolution, but it’s more important than that. Your retainer misses you.

Happy New Year! Remember, New Year, same you, unless you start actually working towards change!

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
