Growing up with around teachers in the classroom and at home can be difficult sometimes, but the lessons learned from having a teacher as a parents shouldn't be taken for granted. Here are a few things you only understand if you grew up with teachers as parents.
1. High Pressure
There’s a lot of pressure that comes with being a teacher’s kid, but the worst is the extra pressure to get good grades. A ‘C’ is just as bad as failing in your house. But you couldn’t thank your parents enough for pushing you to be beyond your best.
2. Friendships between your parents and teachers.
Now, this is a friendship between your parents and your teachers, which is just something you don’t want happening. Once any of your teachers find out about your parents, they start to become almost friends. Teachers have this secret society where they are all friends and bond over teacher things.
3. Higher Expectations
Your teachers being friends also adds to them expecting more of you because they know what you are capable of and they know your parents push you. Just because your parents are teachers doesn’t mean you are any smarter than anyone else.
4. Annoying questions
When family members, people your parents teach with, or just random people always ask the same question, “Are you going to be a teacher?” Just... no. Not that you want to be like your parents, but just no.
5. Awkward encounters outside of school.
If your parents teach in the same district that you go to school in, or worse, teach at your school, then their teacher friends will also be your teachers and they may even be at your house. “Hey Mr./Mrs. Whats-your-name, now you can see me procrastinating all my homework you gave me today.”
6. Stereotypes about getting extra help.
If your parents teach at your school, you get the stereotype that because you parents teach there, you can get ahead or get more opportunities than other students. Your parents love you and want you to succeed, but they also know that you can do it by yourself.
7. Having your friends in your parents class.
If your friends get your parent as their teacher, all you can do is say sorry… to your parents because you know how your friends can be. You just pray this will never happen, but it will. Just because it’s just your luck.
8. Having your friends do poorly in your parent's class.
Only thing worse than your friends being in your parent’s class is if your friend is doing bad in your parents class. These are the friends you might not be friends with anymore, just because they’ve got to be stupid because your parents are the best and wouldn’t let them do poorly easily.
9. Going to school even when the school isn't open.
Being at your parent’s school to visit on days where you don’t have school is fun because you can be in a school and not have to do any work! But it can also be awkward when other teachers that don’t know you think you’re a student. It can get confusing when there is a fifth grader is hanging out in a first grade classroom.
10. You always have someone to help with homework.
Although having your parents as teachers can be annoying, stressful, and just plain uncomfortable. But being able to say “Can you help with my homework?" and always knowing they will be there makes up for it all.
