You've probably heard the term "skinny fat person" before and may or may not have understood what it meant.
And if you're not a skinny fat person, then you probably don't understand how a person can be fat and skinny at the same time. But I'm here to tell you that you most definitely can be fat and skinny at the same time--and, using my own personal experience as a the basis for this criteria, here's how! Also, refer to the chart below to see where skinny fat people fall:
1. We're skinny
And by skinny I mean you have a low to average body weight, simply based on genetics. You didn't diet for this body weight, you didn't work out for this body weight, you just have it.
Which leads me to my next point:
2. We don't work out
Skinny fat people most definitely do not hit the gym. Because going to the gym would mean being toned, and being toned would mean that you're just a fit skinny person. If you're a fat skinny person that means you probably have lots of problem areas that might not be super obvious but are most definitely there. Love handles, saddle bags, and under-arm flappage (or maybe all three!) are all very viable possibilities.
3. We get food babies
Unlike our fit, defined-abs counterparts, skinny fat people get food babies. I know that for me personally, eating a large meal is the equivalent of six months pregnant, no matter how flat my stomach was when I woke up that morning.
4. We have a fast metabolism
(We poop a lot).
5. We look a lot better with our clothes on
With clothes on, we look nice and trim. We can fool the general public into thinking we are in shape. In a bathing suit, it's a whole different ballgame. Say hello to the aforementioned love handles, saddle bags, and under-arm fat.
6. Speaking of clothes...
Loose. Loose is the name of the game. Buy it in L or XL, even if you're really more of small. Fitted clothing reveals all of our skinny fat secrets. I camouflage myself in skinny jeans, loose tops, and ballet flats pretty much every day.
7. We eat like s**t
At least I do. Hot pockets, eggos, pierogies, you name it. Maybe the occasional vegetable thrown in to shock our systems.
8. We dread the day our weight finally catches up to us
Seriously, the day I have to start eating healthy and going to the gym to keep my weight off will be the day I jump off a cliff.
9. We might get diabetes
According to Time, skinny fat people are more in danger of things like heart disease, diabetes, and strokes, than regular obese people are. So there's that.
10. We are the laziest people
Who wouldn't be? Not having to work out to stay thin seems a good a reason as any to loaf on the couch.
So yeah, I hope I cleared the air for anyone who was confused about the idea of "skinny fat." It's a blessing and a curse at the same time, but being a college student with no time or inclination to go to the gym, I really don't hate it.
