10 Things To Remember While Going Through Formal Recruitment

Formal recruitment is one of the best times of the year for active sisters and PNMs. As an active sister, it's the opportunity to share your chapter values and sisterhood with a whole new group of girls. As a PNM, you find your home away from home. It's an undying love for the letters you wear on your chest and the greek community as a whole. Going through formal recruitment can be flat out intimidating. That's just the way it is. But the moment you talk to that first girl from the very first chapter you visit all nerves will vanish and you'll realize this could be your absolute favorite week of the year. But it's also an exhausting week. You're going to be tired, hungry, and at some point probably very annoyed. That's okay. That is perfectly okay.

1. Active sisters are more nervous than you.

Meeting an abundance of people in a short amount of time is a crazy thing. And it's honestly kind of overwhelming, but you have nothing to be nervous about.

2. There's a 99.9% chance the sister you're talking to also wants to take her heels off.

It's a long day for all of us, and quite frankly I don't love walking around in heels all day. Do I love shoes? Yes, it's true. Do I want to die and take them off after so long? Absolutely. I feel your pain, girlfriend. I feel it. We will get through it together.

3. Do not be afraid to ask to use the bathroom.

I REPEAT. Do not be afraid to ask to use the bathroom. We are all humans. Do your thing.

4. Do not feel obligated to be in the same chapter as your best friend.

Every sorority is different just like every girl going through recruitment is different. Being a member of a different chapter than your best friend is not a bad thing. It's actually an awesome thing. Universities love panhellenic sisters and why not be panhellenic with yo sista from another mister, I mean chapter. Sister from another chapter.

5. We all have been in your shoes.

We know what you're feeling, we know it can be emotional, and we want what's best for YOU.

6. Don't be alarmed if you hear something growl.

It was probably just a stomach from a friendly sister near you. Every day is long and there is a very good chance we all have pizza on the brain.

7. Your SRCs are there to help you so don't be afraid to talk to them.

They took on that role to be a counselor, it's in their job name. They will help you through any tough decisions.

8. If you want to go through recruitment and be in a sorority, do it.

It's your decision and not anyone else's. Don't let the stereotypes fool you.

9. Yes, everyone puts their best foot forward and has their hair done and makeup contoured but don't that fool ya.

We are all team messy bun. It's actually a lot of fun getting all done up for recruitment because we all just want to look our best and there is nothing wrong with that! But you can bet the day after bid day my bun will stand proud and tall and probably a little dirty on the top of my tired head.

10. Everything happens for a reason.

Everything. Happens. For. A. Reason.

Xoxo.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
