Winter in Michigan is an interesting time. Whether you are freezing in -20 degree weather or trying to walk to class in a foot of snow, it always seems to surprise us. It seems like winter gets a bad rap and a lot of people seem angry about winter approaching. I wanted to focus on the positives of winter so brace yourself because winter is coming.

1. Red Cedar River

Our campus is beautiful there is no doubt! While fall remains king on this campus winter is coming in at a class second. Watching the ice dangle off the tree branches, as it glows in the sunshine its quite a beautiful site.

2. Snowboarding/Skiing/Snowmobiling is right around the corner!

Winter sports are finally on their way! Whether you take a quick day trip to Mt.Brighton or make a weekend of it and head to Boyne or Nubs Nob there is always something to look forward to. If you haven't done any of these winter sports give them a try! Lots of places offer lessons and its such a fun hobby to have!

3. The incredible feeling of a warm sip of coffee/tea/hot chocolate

We all know the feeling of taking that first sip of something warm when its cold out. Feeling the warmth expand from your throat to your chest. It's instant gratification and you can't help but smile! This also means the peppermint mochas are making the come back and that alone is something to be excited about! It is one of the little things that make winter so great.

4. Winter Fashion

I am in love with sweaters, scarves, beanies and anything of that nature. Winter fashion consists of looking great while being warm and cozy, I mean what could be better! Besides just being cozy the colors of winter fashion are simply the best. Lots of neutral colors followed up with dark blues, greens or reds it is simply the best color scheme that exists all year round.

5. Blankets

This is the season for blanket burritos. There is nothing better than snuggling up on the couch with good book or movie and just being warm and cozy wrapped up in blankets. Just having that moment of bliss when you are so happy and warm is one of the best feelings.

6. You get to watch people/animals experience snow for the first time.

Everyone has seen at least one video of a new puppy playing in the snow for the first time. I think we can all agree that its the cutest thing to ever happen, that being said watching babies or even people on campus experience snow is such an insane thing to witness. Take a moment to think about what it would be like if you have never seen snow before and suddenly all these white fluffy cold things start falling from the sky creating this beautiful landscape. When you are walking watch the people around you when it begins to snow. You may see something you won't ever forget.

7. No more mosquitos and humidity sweat!

I believe this point speaks for itself, but lets all take a moment to appreciate that there won't be more mosquitos attacking your skin for the next few months. Not sweating the moment you step out side is a large plus too. No more awkward backpack sweat!

8. THE FOOD

The food in winter is straight up comfort food. Its the stick to your ribs feel good food that makes everyone happy. Especially when it comes to the winter holidays, you get to share a great meal with people you care about more than once in the winter. What more could you ask for besides good people and great food.

9. The smell

Winter has a distinct smell. Its a sharp, clean, almost metallic smell that you can feel with your whole body from that first breath in. Its a smell I have come to love and cherish, one that wakes you up in the mornings before smacking you in the face with cold wind. Its a smell that means memories are going to be made. Take a moment this winter to stop and smell the air. You won't regret it.

10. The memories you will make

Through the many holidays, final exam week, events, parties and walks you will make so many memories this season. Make them good ones, take a moment each day to appreciate where you are and embrace the cold this winter. I just ask that you be present in those moments that make you happy, take mental snap shots and save them for later. What ever those memories are I hope they are great.

***Have a great and happy winter***

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
