This past year has surely been an interesting one. But a new year means a fresh start and a clean slate for society - hopefully. We've had various celebrity deaths, viral memes, and a vast amount of presidential election drama. Many trends that started in 2016 are certainly ready for their expiration date. Here is a small list of just a few important memories of the last year that have past their prime.
10. "Yasss," "slay," etc.
I'm all for hyping up my friends, but can we start using actual words/compliments to make others feel good? Instead of "yasss queen," can we just say "you look gorgeous" or "your makeup is great?" If I see one more misspelled "yes" in my feed, I might just go insane.
9. "100 coats/layers/pieces" challenge
I don't know who has the time, or money, to be coating themselves with 100 layers of foundation or mascara, but this trend needs to die. It is not only wasteful but certainly uncomfortable for the wearer. The videos are straight-up cringeworthy, too.
8. Vine
In October, Vine let users know that they were going to be shutting down the app in the coming months. Since then, the amount of content and popular "Viners" still posting videos on the app has dropped dramatically. Hopefully, instead of lamenting and demanding that Vine continues, the public will be able to let go and send it on its way.
7. Overreacting Over Celebrity Deaths
OK, this is a touchy subject, but seriously, c'mon. Those 1999 babies talking about how said they are over Debbie Reynolds' death have got to be joking. If you've only seen her in Halloweentown, please don't act like your world is ending. Trust me, when I heard Alan Rickman/Snape had died, I was highly upset. It is always depressing to believe that we will never see another new movie with the person in it. But people die, even celebrities - it's completely natural. We need to get over it and stop blaming "the year" for "taking them" from us.
6. Harambe
Do I need to say more? That trend has got to be dead by now... just like Harambe. People have definitely struggled with accepting death in this last year. Please, just let the gorilla rest in peace.
5. Meninists
"Meninism" is a ridiculous, made-up, anti-feminist ideology that various men claim to be a part of. They basically attack any woman that comes off as pro-women, which is absurd. Leave the attacks on feminists in 2016, especially from the "meninists."
4. The Bee Movie
No one should be spending any amount of time watching parodies/videos making fun of the Bee Movie in their free time. "The Bee Movie but Every Time They Say 'Bee,' It Gets Faster" can not be in the least bit worthy of viewing in entirety. Whoever creates these videos, I'm sorry, but you need to find a new hobby.
3. The Kardashians
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I truly think these people have had their time in the spotlight. Besides divorce and their children growing up, they really just have nothing new or interesting coming for them. Let's invest and worry about our own lives instead of theirs.
2. "Closer" by The Chainsmokers
For the love of all that is good in this world... If I hear that song one more time I might just lose my hearing. It's beyond overplayed at this point. I hope you all had your fun on New Year's Eve because "Closer" cannot be revived anymore.
1. Being Heartless
Nearly everyone on social media will brag about how nothing phases them, they can drop people like they're worth nothing, and they can cut you off at any time. Whatever happened to meaningful friendships and relationships? The overall selfish and inconsiderate attitude of people towards one another is the most important thing that needs to be left in 2016 if we want 2017 to be any better.
