Going on a road trip can be fun and exciting. Depending on where you are headed, there are a variety of things to do between point A and point B. Before heading out on that long anticipated road trip there is much to know.
1. Know where you are going.
Obviously it is important to know where you are going. When you’re driving through different states and cities, things such as laws and weather can be different, and it’s important to know what to expect. Also, look for anything interesting to do while driving through other parts of the country. For example, if you are driving through Arizona, stop by the Grand Canyon, don’t be afraid to stop for a minutes or even a few hours to enjoy the scenery.
2. Get the car prepared.
If you are not renting a car, then it is important to make sure the car you are using is ready for the road. By ready, I mean checking the engine and making sure there is no damage or work that needs to be done. If there is anything wrong then be sure to get it fixed. Also, make sure the air pressure in the tires are good.
3. Go in a group.
Pack the car with a group of people. Going in a group is a lot better than going by yourself or in a pair. In a group you benefit in areas such as tiredness, money, food, etc.
4. Pack lightly.
Try to pack lightly and only what you absolutely need. Yeah, bringing that big stuffed animal that comforts you when you’re trying to sleep might be important to you, but it’s not essential for a long car ride. Cars already feel cramped enough and having extra stuff will just add to the already cramped space.
5. Make sure to have gas money.
Gas is a big one. Save, save, save money for gas. Going in big groups is wise because then the amount of money spent by an individual person is minimal depending on the size of the group.
6. Have music for the ride.
Have some sort of music. Whether that be music you have already downloaded, a CD or even a cassette. Whatever you’re into. The radio isn’t reliable in some parts of the country and you don’t want to end up in awkward silence.
7. Take some food and water.
Food is essential, but not everyone has enough money, or maybe time doesn’t allow you, to make a stop every little while. Try to bring snacks and water along to get you by until you do make a stop.
8. Sleep when you can.
If you are going on a road trip that is going to take longer than a day’s travel, you are going to have to sleep eventually. Try to stop at a hotel for the night and get some rest. If you can’t afford a hotel, then take turns and switch off drivers every so often so that you can get some rest.
9. Take pictures.
Take it all in. Even if you aren’t a professional photographer, get out of the car and snap a quick shot. You don’t have to have a high end camera either, most cell phones have a camera, which is convenient.
10. Watch movies.
This is not for the driver. I repeat, this is not for the driver; pay attention to the road. For those who are in the passenger seat, take with you a portable DVD player or a laptop that has a disc drive, so that you can watch a few movies. It is a good way to pass time while on the road.
