It’s almost that time of year again, when we pack up our cars, drive the miles, and unload into our new home for the year; college. With move-in being just around the corner, here are some things to keep in mind while moving into your college home.
1. Get a good-nights rest the night before
Move-in can be stressful, so getting some sleep the night before will help everyone’s moods.
2. Be Organized
The more organized you pack, the easier move in will be. Label your bins or boxes. Take pictures of what items are packed. Pack like items together. For example, pack everything you need for you bed together; sheets, comforter, pillows, etc.
3. Your parents are trying to help
I know it can be frustrating to put together a tiny room with a bunch of people asking you where you want something. I know it can be frustrating when you are trying to unpack all the while everyone is asking where things go. It can be very overwhelming. Just remember no one is trying to make move-in hard, your parents are trying to lighten your load.
4. Breathe
Like I said above, move-in can be an overwhelming process. Just remember to take some deep breaths along the way.
5. Sometimes things take longer than you may have thought
This is okay! Don’t rush through and half-ass it, take your time.
6. If you forget something, don’t panic
Chances are you can go pick up this item at a nearby store or have someone mail it to you later.
7. Your parents will somehow embarrass you
This is totally normal and everyone around you is going through the same thing with their parents. Let them take their pictures and make their quirky jokes. Smile through the pain.
8. Nothing is permanent
You are only living in this place for maybe a year, so don’t overthink things. This is a temporary living space. Do not excessively purchase decorations or throw pillows, trust me no one cares about what you have hanging on your walls or the small little bowls you have decorating your desk. They will take up so much of your minute space.
9. There is a Target nearby
This goes with number 6. Target is basically a college surplus store, or so it seems. You can find anything you need here, and chances are there is one near your school.
10. Everything will work itself out
Don’t overthink! Everything will fall into place eventually so give it time.
11. Make happy memories
Don’t get mad at anyone during move-in. You won’t be seeing your parents for a little while after move-in, so facilitate happy memories and enjoy your time together in your cramped dorm.
Move-in can be stressful, frustrating and overwhelming. Remember to stay positive throughout these times and you will be grateful in the long run. In a few months you will be moving-out so do not stress about pillow placement or if that poster on the wall is crooked or straight.
