10 Things To Do When It's Too Cold To Go Outside

Like the song says, baby it's cold outside, and maybe a little too cold.

10 Things To Do When It's Too Cold To Go Outside

Well, Winter is upon us, and where I live it’s in full force with the temperatures plummeting below zero. With temperatures that cold you don’t want to go outside, but if you’re anything like me, I grew up outside, and I love the outdoors. There’s not much that will stop me from enjoying nature either, but I pretty much draw the line at snow and freezing temperatures, unless it’s hunting season — that’s an exception. So when I’m stuck inside I get bored fast, and don’t know what to do with myself, but here’s some suggestions.

1. Watch Disney movies.

Well, really, watching any movie is fine, but Disney is always a safe bet.

2. Treat yourself to a Spa Day.

Has it been a while since your nails have seen some TLC? Yeah, same here; treat yourself and give yourself an at home manicure and/or pedicure. Your hands and feet will thank you later, trust me.

3. Tidy up.

Maybe it’s super simple and just cleaning up the dining room, or maybe it’s a bigger task like taking on “the chair”...you know the chair you put all your clothes from failed outfits or papers that you meant to put in a safe spot? You can keep it to light cleaning or you can really dig deep and kick some dust up.

4. DIY projects.

Crafting is always fun! There’s plenty of ideas online, but you can also tap into your creative side and come up with an idea all on your own.

5. Bake something.

Whip up some cookies, bars, or if you wanna go all-out make some cake! Not only will it taste great, but if it involves the oven, it’ll warm up your house a little bit too!

6. Sleep.

Do I really need to say more?

7. Catch up on your "To Do" list.

Whether it’s laundry, cleaning, organizing your desk or closet, going through old boxes from your childhood, or even your old clothes that you don’t wear anymore, when it’s too cold outside is the perfect time to actually get things accomplished that you may or may not have been avoiding for weeks…or months, same difference.

8. Do some online shopping.

Your wish list or cart amount has been growing lately, so maybe now’s the time to buy some of it. You could get a Christmas or Birthday gift for someone in your life, or just get something for yourself... either way you can stay warm under a blanket on the couch and shop at the same time. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!

9. Play some board games.

Heck yeah! Who doesn't like to play board games?! If you don’t want to play board games, or you don’t have any, there’s always card games too. However, this usually only works if someone else is with you, but if there isn’t then that’s always a good excuse to invite your friends over which, brings me to my next, and final point.

10. Spend some quality time with your family, friends, or pets.

Whether you’ve been too busy with work or school, you’ve missed out on some quality time with friends, family, and even your pets. Now is the perfect time to put on a favorite movie, and snuggle up with some hot chocolate and a blanket and just enjoy their company. Or if you need to catch up with them, just sit and talk for a while. And the best part, you can do most of these things with them.

It may be too cold outside but there’s always things to do inside.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
