10 Things To Do Over Winter Break Instead Of Watching TV

How not to be a couch potato.

10 Things To Do Over Winter Break Instead Of Watching TV

C'mon we've all been there: finals are finally over, you were so excited to go home and sleep but two days into break and... now what? After the stress of college we could all use a few days to rest and recover. But after that, you're gonna be pretty bored if you spend your entire break on the couch.

1. Go on holiday-themed outings

These can be really cheesy and are often meant for little kids but if you just accept that you can actually have a lot of fun! I live in Portland, OR and I love going to see the Christmas lights at the zoo!

2. Read a book

This one's pretty obvious, but never underestimate the power of a good book. Grab a cup of coffee or hot cocoa and curl up in a cozy spot to read-- now doesn't that sound nice?

3. Bake cookies

What's more welcoming than entering a house to be greeted by the smell of fresh, home made cookies? Make them for friends or family or just devour them all yourself! And no excuses if you have dietary restrictions-- I'm allergic to eggs and generally try to avoid dairy and refined sugar and I've still found some pretty delicious cookie recipies! Also if you are weird and don't like sweet things, you could make a savory snack like roasted nuts.

4. Volunteer

Get in the spirit of giving and find a way to help out your local community! I found this great place where I help out with horseback riding lessons for people with disabilities. There are lots of unique places like this where you can have really rewarding experiences!

5. Learn a new skill

Whether it be something artistic like drawing or photography or something more practical like learning to change a tire, take advantage of not being super busy to do something you've always wanted to learn how to do! I'm not saying you'll be perfect at it by the end of your winter break, but you could get a pretty good head start if you really dedicate yourself!

6. Hangout with old (and new) friends

Is there someone who you haven't talked to in a while and want to reconnect with? This could be your chance!

7. Pamper yourself

You won't always have this much time on your hands, so take advantage of it. Take a hot bath, give yourself a mani-pedi or put on a face mask, sleep in-- whatever you need to do to feel good and relaxed.

8. Enjoy the snow (if you have it)

What's more classic than building a snow man and making snow angels? If you're really ambitious you could try for a snow cave or an igloo. Skiing and snow-shoing are also great. If you live in a non-snowy place, you have my condolences.

9. Make home made gifts (and they don't have to be for Christmas)

Even if you or your friends don't celebrate Christmas, everyone enjoys nice things right? You could cook something like granola or apple sauce, go the arts-and-crafts route and make some homeade Christmas ornaments, even try your hand at some cosmetic products like lip balm or hand salve (I hear bath bombs are all the rage right now). Home made candles are also fun.

10. Be outdoorsy

Go on a hike or a nature walk or even just a picnic! Enjoy some quality time in nature-- it's good for you.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

You need sleep, but also have 13 things due in the span of 4 days.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
