10 Things To Do In 2017

1. Step outside of your comfort zone.

Challenge yourself to do things you normally wouldn't do. Whether it's befriending a stranger, texting that boy you have a crush on, or speaking your mind, start taking risks. Don't think about what could go wrong. Instead, think about what could go right.

2. Start a new and healthy habit.

For example, eat a clean diet or add a morning workout into your everyday routine. Begin a habit that will benefit you and your well-being.

3. Do something nice for someone else everyday.

Start being selfless and considering the feelings of those around you. Sometimes something as simple as complimenting someone's haircut or outfit may completely make their day. You could always consider anonymously paying for a stranger's meal. The smile on their face when they realize the kind deed committed by a stranger will, perhaps, brighten your mood even more than theirs.

4. Change someone's life for the better.

Get involved in the lives of those around you. Help people who are in trouble without expecting anything in return.

5. Travel somewhere you've never been before.

What's the point of being alive if you aren't truly living? Go out and experience the world. You only have one life, you might as well make the most of it. Traveling is arguably one of the best ways to get to understand and experience the world around you.

6. Learn something new.

Learn a new language, a new skill, or a new talent. Broaden your knowledge and expand your horizons.

7. Try something new.

There's some things in life that we have to take advantage of and experience while we are young and able. Go skydiving, hike to the top of a mountain, go parasailing, paint a canvas, run a marathon... the options are endless.

8. Volunteer somewhere.

Take advantage of volunteer opportunities both in your community and world wide. Personally, I want to volunteer in a third-world country.

9. Keep a list of all the great things that 2017 brings.

Keep a list of all the things and people that make you smile in 2017. It's important to remember and appreciate the good things in life. At the end of the year, look back at your list and reminisce about all the wonderful things 2017 brought.

10. Write a letter to yourself.

Write yourself a letter and put it in an envelope. Keep it somewhere safe that you won't forget about it. Talk about whatever you want! Your favorites, least favorites, goals and aspirations, friends and family, where you see yourself 10 years from now, etc. Have the "future you" open the letter in ten years. You'd be amazed how much has changed!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
