Bring on the Celebration

Finally, finals have come to an end. No more crying and studying, no more sleepless nights where I contemplate my life choices. It’s done, its over, it’s time to celebrate.

Drink.

Finals are probably the most stressful part of college, because basically, our grades and our lives depend on them. During finals, every college student can be found studying and cramming relentlessly, because let’s face it, none of us were really prepared.

For those of you that are twenty-one or over, go ahead and pour yourself a drink. You have completely earned it. Whether your favorite is wine, beer, or hard liquor, pour yourself a glass. If you happen to be under twenty-one, you deserve a drink too! Only, a non-alocholic one. Try virgin margaritas or pina coladas to celebrate the end of finals.

Sleep.

If you’re in college, you know that you don’t sleep until after you have your degree. But, after so many nights of studying instead of sleeping, it’s time that you deserve a little rest this holiday break. So, take a nap, or two, or three. Sleep the day away and let yourself forget what day it is. Get as much sleep as possible, at least until you have to go back for next semester.

Party.

A little party never hurt nobody, right? And what’s a better way to celebrate your last exam than partying it up downtown? Whether you choose to host a party, or go out for a night on the town, you deserve a night to dance, sing, and lose yourself in the music.

Eat.

Celebrating the end of finals week wouldn’t be complete without food. There’s no better time for eating food than during holiday break. Just think of the cookies, cakes, pies, mashed potatoes, turkey, and ham that you’ll get to feast on all holiday long.

Shop.

With finals over and the holidays coming up, the stores are beginning to have massive sales, with their best gear on display. There is absolutely no better time to go shopping than over holiday break. Whoever said money can’t buy happiness, clearly has never seen a college kid during finals week. Grab a buddy and head to the stores to scope out the deals going on this season.

Vacation.

Finals are the most stressful part of the college experience, so take a little time for yourself and go on a vacation. This could be to a foreign country, in the United States, in your home state, or even a staycation in your dorm. Regardless of where you are, find some time to relax and unwind as if you are on vacation.

Spend Time with your Friends and Family.

Finals keeps everyone busy, so right after is the best time to spend time with your friends and family. No one has deadlines to make for class, or classes to attend. Plan time to go out with your friends, and time to stay in with your family. Spending time with the people you care about can be the greatest gift that holiday break has to offer you.

Workout.

Now, most people wouldn’t think of this as a way to relax, but in all actuality, it is! Working out can help you to get rid of the left over stress from finals, and let go of the semester. Take some time to add in a workout into your day. Any workout is a good workout, whether it be yoga, boxing, running, or using the machines at the gym. Every workout will help you release the left over stress, and help you begin your holiday break.

Take a Drive.

Driving can be a stress relief, which, after all of those finals is something that we all need desperately. Sometimes its nice to not think about our plans or where we are going, and just drive. Get together with a group of friends, and take a drive somewhere. On your drive, take in the beauty of what’s around you, and find ways to make your trip into an adventure that you all will remember forever.

Treat Yourself.

Instead of shopping all of the sales at the store, treat yourself to something that makes you happy. This could be something as small as your favorite Starbucks latte or as big as buying the new Beats headphones that you have had your eye on for quite sometime. No matter what you choose to do to treat yourself, remember: you survived finals. You deserve it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
