Everyone loves a stereotypical cheerleading movie. I'm here to point out the many parts of these movies that are extremely accurate. As crazy as some of them may seem there are several aspects of these movies that most cheerleaders in high school can relate to. This is from my perspective of high school cheer looking at it now from college cheer.
1. Dropping the spirit stick is IN FACT a big deal.
If you receive a spirit stick at your team's cheer camp dropping that stick will put your team in harms way. You don't believe me? Don't try it.
2. Where there's a football rivalry...there's an even bigger cheer rivalry
The football players settle their disputes on the field while us cheerleaders handle our business on the sidelines and during the halftime show.
3. Every team has a Winnie.
We all know that one girl that thinks she deserves to be captain ten times more than the assigned captain and will do anything to push the girl out of the way.
4. We all started somewhere...
Unless you were naturally born talented then you probably were like me and started out like Skylar and Christina, but eventually made yourself better!
5. Having cheer nightmares before something huge is completely normal.
The nerves of a tryout, competition, or huge game always scared me just as much as the final exams.
6. Crop uniforms are more often than not a dream of most cheerleaders.
Most high schools find this inappropriate, but these movies always made them look so cute!
7. Any idea or suggestion often results in some form of an argument.
You can't say anything without someone chiming in from the back to make a comment on something.
8. You've probably attempted a hip hop routine once or twice.
They say cheerleaders shouldn't try hip hop, but it is always so fun.
9. When you feel good in your uniform you have to show it off.
You know how it feels to get that perfect fitted uniform and wear it to school for the first time. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.
10. You have the ability to quote at least one of these as well as recite some of the cheers.
There's always a perfect time to make a Bring it On reference at cheer practice or at a game. Cheerleaders get unexplainably excited about these movies, but we have fun with them as we cheer and we lead and act like we're on speed.
