Every incoming freshman is nervous for college. They don't know what to expect about classes, greek life, clubs, food, and other activities. As a rising sophomore here are 10 things that every freshman should know:
1. Go to the activities fair
Getting involved in college is the easiest way to build up your resume and make friends. There are a million clubs that you probably had no idea about that are worth joining. The beginning to a great school year starts here.
2. Parties are not like "Project X"
Don't expect to have parties like all the movies. They are nothing like this!!!!
3. Campion isn't the greatest
Yes you might have liked the food at Admitted Students Day... because it was catered. But get used to the same pasta, chicken sandwiches, and mystery meat in the back everyday. Bring lots of snacks and make your parents come visit you a lot.
4. "Syllabus Week" does not exist at SJU
Chances are you're going to get right down to business with your classes the first week of school. Expect only one day for teachers to go over the syllabus.
5. The Library is a zoo during finals
If you don't get there at the crack of dawn you most likely will not get a seat. Try to utilize other places on campus such as: common lounge, upper floor of campion, science center class rooms, and other buildings.
6. Public Safety Shuttles NEVER come at the right time
Download the Rider app for the most accurate source to track the shuttles. You don;t want to be waiting outside of target for 40 minutes.
7. Utilize the Gyms in Your Dorm
Instead of dealing with crowded O'Pake make sure to use the gyms on the bottom floors of your dorms. If you live in McShain go early in the morning or late at night to avoid the rush.
8. Don't Do Laundry On A Sunday
Everyone thinks Sunday is the best day to do laundry...but it's not. Try to find time during the week when less people are doing laundry.
9. Download SJU My Delivery
Since campion is not the best, you're going to get tired of it really quick. SJU My Delivery is a way to inexpensively get food quickly while studying, watching Netflix, or hanging with friends. Ubering everywhere adds up quickly and you'll find your summer job money slipping out of your pocket.
10. Go see your advisor, professors, and career development center
The more you reach out for help the better you will do. You only get out what you put in.
Freshmen year can be tough but it's the little things that make a big difference.
