10 Things That My Younger Brother Taught Me

You taught me a thing or ten.

10 Things That My Younger Brother Taught Me

Yeah sure, I mean my 17 year old brother might be younger than me, but dear God, he has taught me more than I could have even learned on my own. There’s something about younger siblings that make you really stop and think how lucky you are to be related to them. Here are 10 things that my brother Matt taught me over the years.

1. How to not take things so seriously

If I'm nervous about something or anxious you tell me to just relax and that whatever happens happens.

2. No guy is ever worth my tears

I’m lucky to be close with you and because of that you get to hear all m boy drama. You have taught me that no matter what happens, no guy should ever make me feel less than who I really am.

3. Late texts do make me feel better

Whether I’m texting you about a noise down the hallway or the mice in the attic (swear to God it was a clown or a raccoon on steroids), no matter what time, you are always quick to respond with your, “Go to sleep it’s probably nothing.”

4. Arguments with my mom are stupid and I should probably apologize

Even when I’m at school I always text you to see if mom is talking about me at home when we get into a fight. Of course, you always tell me I’m being dramatic and that I should apologize—I’m stubborn so of course I don't listen, but don't worry, I know you're right.

5. Sarcasm clearly has no limits

You are the biggest asshole I have ever met and because of that I am thankful. You tell people how it is and are very straight up when it comes to voicing your opinions.

6. It’s okay to miss someone

You taught me that even though times get tough, it’s okay to miss someone. Whether that be a friend or a lost loved one, you always make sure to remind me that they are never really gone.

7. I can no longer win a wrestling match

Karma is a huge bitch because I used to beat the shit out of you when we were little. Mom always warned me that you would grow, but I never really believed her. I swear, you grow an extra inch every time I see you. Now when we try to fight I just flee to my bedroom and pray to God I can shut the door in time.

8. If you don’t have a passion for something anymore, stop doing it.

You have taught me that if something doesn't make you happy anymore, stop doing it. You shouldn't waste your time doing something if you no longer have a passion for it.

9. Naps are always a good idea.

If anyone naps as much as you do, let me know. I swear if I’m not in class I’m sleeping—all thanks to you.

10. You taught me to be strong.

I really wish that I could say that I taught my younger brother to be strong, but we both know you were stronger than I was from the beginning. You taught me how to face any problem head on and to be brave.

You might not know it, and I might not say it enough, but you are one of the people who has taught me more life lessons than anyone combined. Some older siblings might be embarrassed to admit that their younger brother or sister had big impacts in their lives, but I’m not. I am grateful for having a smart-ass, intelligent, and caring younger brother in my life. Much love to you, you lil shit.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.
