I can’t believe that I am considered an adult and have gained my independence. It’s really odd and quite frankly there’s a large percent of the time that I deny it and would like nothing more than to move back with my parents and be comfortable in my bed. It’s safe, I know it, and it’s home -- that’s not the way the world works though and I wouldn’t change it. Two years after moving out into the big world, I’ve established some things that make it a little easier. For those who are just venturing out on their own, here’s a list of 10 things that help make the transition to independence bearable:
1. Have your best friend on speed dial
They're your rock, moral compass, and overall they know how to get you through the day. Without them we would probably be lost somewhere. Let's hear it for the best friends! (Thanks for texing me every 30 seconds to reassure me.)
2. Buy lots of Chocolate
It's a healthy and vital part of a balanced diet, soothing your soul and your cravings.
3. Invest in a good pillow
The best advice I ever received was to buy a good pillow. In college -- or seminary, wherever you are -- you don't get a whole lot of sleep, so those Z's you do catch should count.
4. Find a good series on Netflix
Finding a series with a solid three or four seasons and a healthy 12+ episodes is a score, and a great way to spend all that 'down time' budding adults have.
5.Also have Mom on speed dial
For those moments you regret growing up and want to turn right back around, mom calms you down and helps you get back on the path of reason and sanity. (Plus whenever you need a couple extra dollars or need to know how to do your taxes, mom's always there.)
6. Establish an organizational system
"There is a place for everything, and everything has its place." The moment you have that all set up, your life will become so much easier. Being organized allows your brain to have clarity and relax a bit. Break out the label maker, we're categorizing!
7. Purchase a cookbook
Either that or stock up on the Pinterest recipes, because there's only so many meals that can consist of Ramen noodles, coffee, or take out.
8. Find yourself a local coffee shop
It provides you with WiFi, a central meeting location, a nice cup of coffee and if you're lucky you'll meet some amazing people there. More than likely this coffee shop will be where you spend 90 percent of your time and money.
9. Get involved!
Sports, chess, a cappella! Join a club, get involved with things in your community, do something to have a way to spend your time. The more busy you keep yourself, the less time you have to spend dwelling on impending adulthood. (Plus, you meet some incredible people.)
10. Surround yourself with a solid friend group
Nothing can help you through the trials and tribulations as much as your best friend (re: number one) and your #Squad. Through thick and thin these friends will be there with ice cream, textbooks, and an extra phone charger if you need it. Nothing is better than having people around you who love and support you.
No, growing up isn't easy and gaining independence also isn't so simple, but boy is it worth it. Establishing who you are is so liberating and there are so many things you discover that the world has to offer. Find things that you enjoy and that make you happy and start to compile your own list. It's the best ticket to success.
