10 Things That Happen When Your Roommate Becomes Your Best Friend

The best (or worst) thing about college is getting to live with a roommate. Depending on who you end up with, this experience can be good or bad. This person sees you at your worst, when it's 3 am and you have a paper due at 8 or at your best, when that cute guy from chemistry finally texts you. If you're lucky, you get someone great that eventually becomes your best friend and these things happen:

1. Every night becomes a therapy session.

Because who else is going to listen to all of your problems and not judge? She'll always tell you like it is. You both give great advice.

2. You have one giant closet instead of two small ones.

You trust each other enough to share everything. With both of your fashion skills combined, nothing can stop you. Her black dress + your red shoes = total world domination.

3. You memorize each others' schedule.

It's not planned. It just kind of happens. Oh it's 2:00 on a Wednesday? She's in math class.

4. You always have someone to go places with you.

"Hey, wanna go get dinner?" "Sure!" She'll always tag along on your adventures across campus or anywhere else you might need to go. She can make any boring task a fun one!

5. You understand each other completely.

It's like you have pizza telepathy. She knows what you're thinking before you even think it. "Wanna order pizza tonight?" "Duh."

6. You're always updated on each others' lives, even on long breaks apart.

If you can't tell her in person, a text is the next best thing. It's like she never left. She gets a daily update of your life, even if it's just telling her you saw a cute puppy that day.

7. You celebrate together and cry together.

She's the very first person you call when something big happens. She's there to dance around the room with you after you ace your science exam and cry with you when you're stressed. Sometimes both. You both care about the small things and that's what makes your friendship so great.

8. You balance each other out.

She's the crazy one with a sunshiny personality and you're the cool, calm, and collected one that keeps you both put together. It works perfectly. Together, you're the dream team.

9. You watch the same shows on Netflix.

Usually together. You might even share an account. You obviously can't watch the next episode without her. It's against all laws of having a roommate.

10. You wouldn't trade each other for the world.

She quickly became your best friend and you couldn't imagine living with anyone else.

Hopefully, you'll be able to find a roommate this great.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
