As an education major, you know how valuable education is and want to make a difference in children lives. Some people even say that it is a gift. But there are always going to be those people who can't wrap it around their heads why on earth you wanna be a teacher. So these are definitely statements that you've heard before.
1."So you are going to college just to go back to school?"
Well duh, that's where most teachers end up going. It's not like we are going back to sit in 10th-grade biology. We get to run our own classrooms.
2. "Teachers make no money."
Remember that teacher that you loved so much and still think about how much fun their class was? Money wasn't on their mind when they were helping you learn. It isn't about money. It's about making a difference.
3. "That's an easy major."
Oh really? Because making all of my lesson plans, presentations, test, quizzes, worksheets, homework, class activities and progress reports are just SO easy. Anyone in the world could do it.
4. "I hate little kids. You are crazy for wanting to teach them."
Aw, you don't like kids? I don't remember asking. Also, I must be so crazy for wanting to teach children how to read, do math equations, and loving each one of them with all my heart.
5. "You want to teach middle school? Are you joking?"
Yes, of course, I am joking! Why would I ever want to go help kids that will struggle through these weird, weird years? Why would I ever want to help kids prepare for high school?
6. "Why would you ever want to go back to high school?"
If you are a secondary education major, this one makes you want to throw something. So we won't even go there.
7. "I could never be a teacher."
And I could never be a chemical engineer. What's your point?
8. "You are never going to find a job."
You are so right! There are over 50,000 schools in America and it seems like none of them are hiring. Looks like I just need to find a different career.
9. "So you just want to be a teacher? I thought you were smarter?"
Yes, I am smart. That is why I want to use my knowledge to help kids learn about the world and help them prepare to be successful.
10. "Those who can, do: those who can't, teach."
Just. Stop.
