Regardless of whether you’re wealthy and thriving or living on the streets, life can sometimes kick you in the a** when you’re least expecting it to.
Society tells us that by our senior year of high school, we need to know what we want to do with the next four years of our lives in college—and then need to know what we want to do years after that. I am telling you, however, that it is okay to not know what you’re even eating for breakfast tomorrow morning. Society may tell you one thing, but I am telling you that you’re young, and you should embrace every moment of that.
1. Stop worrying so much
Yes, there is plenty of stress that comes with the part of being in college, trying to manage a part-time job, and somehow paying your rent on time. However...there are many, many worse things in the world, and that is something that many of us need to sit back on and ponder on.
2. Embrace your individuality
In high school, it was easy to get made fun of for the things you were experimenting with. But in the real world, it is actually pretty cool to stand apart from the crowd and be your own person—regardless of what people think.
3. It’s okay to make mistakes
Often we are told that mistakes are negative aspects. However, I think that in a way, mistakes can be looked at as a positive part of life. Mistakes are things that you learn from, and learning is everything. Stop being afraid to fail and stop hindering from the fact that you messed up. It takes a courageous human being to own up to their mistakes. Learn from it, don’t do it again and move the hell on.
4. YOU WILL MEET SOME VERY TERRIBLE PEOPLE IN THIS LIFE OF YOURS
My mom always used to tell me "They may not be a bad person, they may just be having a bad day." I never necessarily understood this until I grew up and became more knowledgeable of my own surroundings. Typically people's actions are much more about themselves then they are about you.
5. Alcohol is not always the answer
Intelligence is. Get an education while you can. It is a blessing that you have the right to education because there are many people in this world who would kill to be stressed about midterms and homework. It may suck now, but I promise you’ll love yourself for it after.
6. Don’t waste your energy on people who don’t deserve it
It’s more difficult to be mean than it is to be nice. If I’ve learned anything in this short life of mine, it’s the fact that you get more bees with honey. Kill em’ with kindness, always.
7. You don't need to be liked by everyone to find happiness
In high school, it was cool to be “popular” and have 30+ friends that you hung out with. Being in a sorority, I’ve made many friends, probably more than 30 if we’re actually counting. But what I’ve really come to realize is that the small group of friends that I hangout with is all I really need. It’s better to have 5 great friends than 50 fake ones.
8. Treat Yo’self
Exercise and eating healthy are truly the keys to a good well-being. HOWEVER, if you’re cramming for a test and stress eating may be the route you’re about to take, it’s OK to treat yourself to that cookie you’ve been staring at all day. It’s OK to binge watch that Netflix show you’ve been dying to see for months if you just aced that mid-term you stayed up all night studying for. Balance is everything, and sometimes, you deserve it.
9. Don't chase that boy in the bar
The odds of you marrying that boy you met in the bar last night are slim to none. I can assure you that. It is very rare to come across a nice boy in the bar who is simply just trying to buy you a drink just from the kindness of their heart.
