Hurricane Hermine paid Savannians (and Georgians in general) a visit this past weekend to remind us that, yes, southern hurricane season is indeed underway. Here's what's going through the minds of several Savannians as hurricane season falls upon us:
1. Hit up Publix on Abercorn to stash up some goodies.
And by goodies I mean drinks and junk food... not water or other essentials.
2. Consider going to Tybee to watch the waves.
“We can even go sit on the pier benches under the overhang and watch!”
3. Then reconsider because the thought of navigating the treacherous Highway 80 in the midst of flooding is a no-go.
It takes hours to leave the island on a normal day. Imagine leaving on a day filled with heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and substantial flooding. It’s not even worth the waves or Wendy’s stop on the way out.
4. Check WTOC for weather updates.
From Turley in the morning to Wetherbee in the afternoon.
5. Keep WTOC on for background noise even when they stop watching for updates.
Just in case.
6. Look at pictures of flooding downtown…
In the squares, throughout Bull Street...
7. …and fully expect Habersham to be closed.
No explanation needed.
8. Throw hurricane parties that pretty much consist of PJs and drinks.
Sweet tea, obviously! What did you think I meant?
9. Or just sit on the front porch and watch as wind gusts threaten to knock over the trees in your yard.
Nothing like rocking chairs and raging storms to soothe a southerner’s soul.
10. Reminisce about the last time a hurricane hit the Chatham County area…
Floyd has become something of a household name, especially when referring to evacuation failures.
11. …while sitting on the porch watching the wind.
Nothing really changes except for the topic of porch gossip. And bad Savannah drivers’ worsened attempts to navigate a four-way stop in the event of power outage.
