I think we can all agree that Hawaii is a paradise of sorts. As someone who has been to Hawaii, I can tell you firsthand that statement is correct. However, not only is the island itself truly breathtaking, but the Hawaiian culture is purely beautiful, as well. Although I am not of Hawaiian descent nor am I a Hawaiian local, I’ve taken an interest in learning about Hawaiian Pidgin. Here are just a few beautiful Hawaiian phrases that everyone should know:
1. Kahuna Nui Hale Kealohalani Makua
“Love all you see, including yourself.”
Seriously, this says it all! Share love with everything that comes your way. Share love with yourself.
2. ‘A’ohe Pu’u Ki’eki’e Ke Ho’a’o ‘Ia E Pi’i
“No cliff is so tall it cannot be climbed.”
Just a little Hawaiian encouragement! Don't let anything stop you, every obstacle can be overcome!
3. Ua ola loko i ke aloha—he alii ka la’i, he ha Ku’ulani na
“Life is an echo, what you give out comes back.”
This is extremely important to remember in today's society. A lot of people don't want to put the work in for what they want. They just expect to be given everything.
4. Pūpūkahi I Holomua
“Unite to move forward.”
In the divided society we live in today, we all need to hear this. The only way we can achieve great things is together.
5. E Mau ana Ke Aloha
“Love shall endure.”
Through love and patience, anything can happen.
6. Ukuli'i ka pua, onaona I ka mau'u
“Tiny is the flower, yet it scents the grasses around it.”
This is just a fancy way of saying that one person can make a huge difference.
7. E kūlia i ka nu'u
“Strive to reach the highest.”
This is so simple, yet so encouraging. We should always aim high and strive to do the best we can.
8. I ulu no ka lālā i ke kumu
“The branches grow because of the trunk of the tree.”
We should respect our elders because without them laying the stepping stones for us we wouldn't be the advanced society we are today.
9. Na ka pupuka ka lili
“Jealousy belongs to the ugly.”
Stop being jealous! As the saying goes, jealousy isn't a pretty color on you. Turn any feelings of jealousy into encouragement to instead make yourself happy.
10. Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Āina i ka Pono
“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness."
These words were said all the way back in 1843 by King Kamehameha III. He wanted to spread the message that people should do what makes them happy but should also take care of the land and do what is right in their life.
Keep these phrases in mind when you need a little pick-me-up! Also, remember that Hawaii isn't just a tropical paradise for vacation; it's an island rich with a beautiful culture that deserves as much respect as any other culture.I only mean to spread some knowledge about the Hawaiian culture and don’t mean to offend anyone with this post.
