I went to Pittsburgh this past weekend, and before leaving, I had to think of all the things I might possibly need. I was only going for two and a half days, but I was still in the mindset of what if I need x while I'm gone!? It's a bad cycle to get into, but I was there for two days leading up to when I was leaving.
1. Your phone and charger
In the current state of the world and how reliant we are on tech, it's wildly important you don't leave your phone at home. I didn't, but that was mainly because I needed the GPS app to even get to Pittsburgh. Your charger will save you from being stranded somewhere when your phone ultimately dies.
2. Your pillow
If you have the space in your car or on the plane, I recommend taking your own pillow when you go somewhere. It's not that where you're going won't have pillows for the using, but it is possible that they'll be too flat or too fluffy. When you have your own pillow, you're ensuring a good night's sleep while away from home.
3. Different shoe options
It might just be Ohio weather temperament that makes me say this, but I know that I packed a pair of boots and my Vans because you never know if it's going to snow or be 60 degrees on any given day.
4. Cash
It's possible that your bank will flag your card if you go to different gas stations in different states. It's also possible that other places might reject your card. I'm recommending cash just in case.
5. Clothes for all occasions
I just mean snow and not-snow kind of weather. If it's cold, that's one outfit, but if it's snowing, that's something completely different. Be prepared! If you're going somewhere obviously warm, there is the outfit for humid weather and for a dry heat.
6. Toothbrush, toothpaste & any other necessary toiletries
I can't tell you the number of times I have almost left the house for a trip without my freaking toothbrush. Don't do it! Paying for these items (toothbrush, hairbrush, makeup, feminine hygiene products, etc) when you already own them is silly. Just don't forget them in the hotel or friend's house when you're coming home.
7. Products for entertainment
You won't spend every day out spending money on food or entertainment. Bring books, bring your laptop (and charger!!), your tablet or whatever else might entertain you in the downtime you're bound to have. I took two different books (and some homework) and my computer.
8. Sunglasses
I went to Pittsburgh after it snowed there and in Ohio, but sunglasses are necessary even in the snow. Have you ever opened the door to go out into a snowy day and been blinded by the powder white on the ground? Exactly. Sunglasses are good even in the cold weather.
9. Medications
Maybe you prefer Advil to Tylenol. Maybe migraine formula always works best for whatever aches you have. Maybe you're taking birth control or something else prescription. Whatever the medication, don't forget it! Especially if it's prescription.
10. Gas
"Oh, I've got 3/4ths of a tank, I'm fine." NO. Fill up at home. Gas is less than two dollars in most places around campus but there is no promising that it will stay that way when you drive whichever direction. If you're flying... well, this is irrelevant to you. But hey, maybe you should fill your car up before you leave because you never know if you'll want to do some long-ish distance driving when you get home!
