I'm from northwest Ohio, right in the middle of the flatlands. I also go to school in northwest Ohio where the campus basically sits in the middle of a giant field. The wind is always blowing and there's one single hill on the edge of campus. All my friends from out of town think the flatlands are boring and weird, but I like it. Here are some things people living in the flatter part of America know to be true.
1. Driving
You basically just drive in a straight line. You can go as fast as you would like and there's no hills or sharp turns to slow you down.
2. Tornadoes
At least once a year, a severe storm and tornado warning is issued across northwest Ohio and we have to take cover.
3. Farms
There are farms and corn fields everywhere!
4. See things for miles
You can see tall buildings and trees for miles and miles.
5. Man made hills
I know of two hills in my area that have been built for strictly sledding and snowboarding.
6. All four seasons
We've got spring, summer, fall and winter. It's 90 in the summer and there's a foot of snow in the winter. Spring is rainy and fall is cooler. We have every season and everything that comes with that season.
7. Windy
It's windy because there's no hills or mountains to block the wind.
8. Vulnerable to ear popping
My ears are always popping whenever I travel. Apparently people who are used to the hills, their ears don't pop like at all.
9. No natural landmarks
Yeah, there's no giant hill at the end of the road to tell you where you are.
10. Lack of ski resorts
If you want to go skiing, you have to travel to other places like Colorado. There are a few ski resorts in Michigan. One resort in Michigan is Boyne Mountain Resort and their "mountain" is actually made out of an old landfill.
