10 Things All People With Homesickness Deal With

It's not easy for everybody to leave their home. For some people, it is more than not easy, it is downright unimaginable. Every day people who deal with homesickness, myself included, go through these 10 things on a daily basis to an extent which makes us want to legitimately rip our hair out. If you know someone who seems to never wants to leave the house, but you can't figure out why, this list may come in handy. You can determine if your friends suffer from homesickness, or maybe you yourself have been feeling it recently but haven't been able to determine what that feeling is. Homesickness may be undiagnosed in most of us, but more than enough of us know we are homesick.

1. Dealing with any type of problem is always easier at home, on the couch preferably.

2. If your friends wanted to have a sleepover they already knew that it was going to be at your house, no ifs ands or buts.

3. Leaving home to go somewhere far away for any period of time is the worst.

4. No matter how great the place is you're going, you will always miss your pets.

5.Your house has its own unique smell, and no one else's house can compete.

6. FaceTiming with your loved ones is never enough to make you feel any less homesick. (Plus, it never actually connects anyway!)

7. It doesn't matter if the new place you're sleeping at has a tempurpedic mattress, you will always miss sleeping in your own comfy bed.

8. It's OK to admit you will deeply miss Mr. Cuddlemuffin (or whatever you call your favorite teddy bear).

9. No matter how aggravating your parents may be, you secretly miss them, too.

10. As Dorothy once said, "There's no place like home" and this is the thing we miss the most. The simple feeling of being able to say, "I'm home."

In the end, although homesickness may be undiagnosed, it is certainly something that many people suffer from on a daily basis. Homesickness is somewhat an indescribable feeling, yet it is is one of the worst feelings a person can experience. I recommend never telling someone who is homesick to "get over it" because it's not something a person can simply get over. If your friends seem to be suffering and they are feeling any of the listed items above I would suggest taking them home. Lastly, never be ashamed of feeling homesick. Millions of people experience the same feelings and urges to be home every day. You are not alone, in fact you may be surrounded by people feeling the same things as you are so never be so quick to judge. Homesickness is a real thing, and there are a number of ways to help treat it, with the number one cure being to simply go home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
