It's called heterochromia iridum and it means my eyes are two different colors. One green and one brown. Although something I used to be self-conscious about, I hardly even notice anymore and have learned to embrace. It's not weird, it's unique. Here are some of the most common questions and comments I get.
1. Do you wear contacts?
This question is often the first thing out of their mouth while intently staring at my eyes. Why yes, kind sir, I do, but no, they aren't colored and have nothing to do with the fact that my eyes are two different colors.
2. Were you born like that?
This questions typically comes up deep into the two-different-colored-eyes conversation. To clear it up; yes, I was born with two different colored eyes. But my green eye was originally blue and didn't "officially" change to green until I was two. Crazy, I know.
3. Are you blind in one eye?
Um, no. And I don't know you well enough for you to be blatantly asking me that.
4. Do you see differently than normal people do?
To be completely honest, I don't know what anyone else "sees." And how exactly does a "normal person" see? To (kind of) answer your question, I do have terrible eyesight but it has nothing to do with the color of my eyes. I don't think I am color blind and these contacts (and glasses) work wonders.
5. I'm sure you get this all the time, but...
This statement is usually followed up with something nice. "I'm sure you get this all the time, but I think your eyes are beautiful." "I'm sure you get this all the time but, your eyes are so cool." Actually, I don't get this all the time. So thank you, kind soul. Thank you.
6. Wow...
...is all they say as they intently stare into my eyes. Although (very) few and far between, the infatuation is real with these people.
7. You look like my dog
...or my cat. Or a dog (or a cat) I've seen before. Although I know what you're getting at, it doesn't do my confidence any good to know you're comparing me to your pet. Or an animal you've seen before.
8. Have you ever thought about getting colored contacts?
When I was younger I wanted colored contacts so bad, but my family thought it would take away from my "originality." Obviously, my 12-year-old self didn't give a hoot about my originality, but now I'm glad they never let me get them. I don't have any interest in hiding these cool things anymore.
9. Which eye do you like better?
The green one.....I think
10. What does your license say?
The pressure was real when the DOT told me I could choose. So it says my eyes are brown...which is conflicting to the above answer.
All in all, having two different colored eyes is pretty freaking cool. Shoutout to all of those individuals who have had nothing but love for these crazy eyes of mine.
