10 Things To Do Over Break

As busy college students, having a break that lasts longer than an hour seems extremely odd and out of place. If you're anything like me, then you have absolutely no idea what to do with yourself.

1. Read a book. I always have a list of books that I want to read, but when I'm at school I feel guilty if what I'm reading doesn't correlate with my classes. So, pick up a book and read for fun.

2. Watch an entire series on Netflix. Who doesn't want to watch Gossip Girl for the 10th time?

3. Visit with family. Face it. Whether you want to admit it or not, you've missed them while you were away at school. Eat a home cooked meal, get you dad to buy you some decent vodka, and be sure to tell your parents and siblings just how much you love them!

4. Take a walk. Not only is it good exercise, but a stroll around your hometown can be oddly satisfying.

5. Go somewhere by yourself. You've been around thousands of classmates for months. Some alone time can be a great thing!

6. Call up an old friend. Remind someone that you care and share some old memories. A blast from the past is always a fun way to spend your time off!

7. Make a fun recipe. You finally have a pantry filled with groceries other than ramen and that box of cereal you bought and never ate. Get creative and make something for yourself and friends/family.

8. Wake up early one morning. There's no greater sense of accomplishment than waking up early to be productive without having to! You can sleep when classes start back up! ;)

9. Watch a movie with your family. Pick something new or go with a classic. Snuggling up on the couch with your family and some cocoa is the perfect way to relax and feel comfortable during your few weeks at home.

10. Go to your favorite place in your town. You're only home for a few weeks. Make the most of it by visiting your favorite old spots!

We are only home for a little while, so do what you can't do at school. Relax and spend time with your family. Explore your town and act like a tourist! After all you don't really live there anymore. Take this break to de-stress and focus on the basics. Just enjoy everything that you have ever taken for granted.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
