10 Things OU Freshmen Should Do During Fall Semester

As a freshman in college, you are given tons of advice. Whether it’s your parents, friends or your RAs, they all have your best interest in mind. They will all tell you to get involved any way that you can, and they are 100 percent correct. However, here’s a list that is a little more specific for you freshmen who are new to Athens. You already made the best decision of your life by attending OU, so let this list help you solidify that decision and bring you back for spring semester.

1. Stand in the Ozone for at least one football and basketball game.

This might require getting to the field or court earlier than usual but it will be worth it. Once you learn the cheers, you’ll be ready to bash any team that comes to our campus.

2. Eat a chicken and waffle sandwich at Uptown Grill.

Sounds gross but it’s amazing. I prefer to ask for extra sauce, and I’d advise you do the same. No one really knows what the sauce is, but it'll keep you coming back for more, whether it's late at night or on a walk to class.

3. Explore Greek life.

Some people like it, and some people don’t. It might be for you, and it’s a great way to meet friends, so go ahead and look into it. There is much more to Greek life than social fraternities and sororities. Check out the service and professional groups as well.

4. Go to slice night at Court Side.

You really can’t go wrong with ordering pizza for 50 cents. This will be a nice change from the dining hall food you’ll quickly get tired of.

5. Eat at Bagel Street Deli.

One of the most unique restaurants on Court Street, this is a must for any freshman new to Athens. The small, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere will help you feel connected to Athens in a new way. With over 20 bagel selections to eat your sandwich with, you are bound to find the perfect combination.

6. Walk on Court Street during HallOUween.

This one cannot be stressed enough. Get a kick-ass costume and walk down the street during Halloween. The annual block party that occurs around Halloween is pretty much what OU is known for. You have to experience it firsthand to really appreciate the scale of the shindig.

7. Hang out on South Beach while there is nice weather.

It’s one of the best places on campus to meet people and enjoy the weather. You can play basketball, volleyball or or you can just read a book. If you like South Beach during the fall semester, just wait until you see it during the spring.

8. Sled down Jeff or Morton Hill.

Yes, if we are lucky enough to get some snow before winter break, you have to try this. Get something that can work as a sled in the snow. My friends and I decided to use the tops of trashcans. Dining hall trays are also popular and the most common technique. Be creative and have fun.

9. Play an intramural sport.

Whether you think of yourself as a competitive person or not, playing an intramural sport is one of the best ways to make friends and become even closer with the friends you’ve already made. There are competitive leagues for those who fancy themselves as real contenders, and there are also plenty of non-competitive leagues to just use as exercise and hanging with friends.

10. Love every second of your first semester.

I know it's cheesy, but I’m serious. Yeah, that 7:30 a.m. class will be hard to get up for after you just stayed up all night studying for another class you have an exam in, but always remember that college is a privilege. You’re lucky to be here, so enjoy it. Every second of it.

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
