10 Things Every Ole Miss Student Knows To Be True

Hotty Toddy, Gosh Almighty!

10 Things Every Ole Miss Student Knows To Be True

Attending a big university was always a dream of mine while growing up, but I had no idea that I would end up being a student at the University of Mississippi, or as well all like to call it, Ole Miss. There's a lot of unique things about our school that make us so great, some would even say we're the best school in the SEC (not bias or anything). We definitely have our own way of life here at Ole Miss and some things are just hard to understand unless you're a Reb. As students, we have become accustomed to things that we probably would think were weird if we didn't go here.

1. The best time to yell "Hotty Toddy" is all the time.

It doesn't matter who you see or where you are. If you see that "Ole Miss" logo on someone, you have the right to shout "Hotty Toddy!" It's the one time where yelling at a stranger in public is completely appropriate.

2. When anyone asks if you're ready you simply reply with, "Hell yeah, damn right!"

"Are you ready?!" You have to reply with the next line, and it'd be wrong of you if you didn't. And did your day really happen unless someone started the Hotty Toddy chant?

3. We win the award for most confusing.

We're known as the Ole Miss Rebels, our mascot is the Rebel Black Bear, we have a Landshark defense, we yell "Fins Up!" and "Hotty Toddy!" and we're honestly just as confused as everyone else when it comes to this. But we do it anyway because we love our school, am I right?

4. We turn nouns into verbs.

The Grove is not just a place on campus. The Grove is a way of life. One does not just simply go to the grove on game days, one goes "groving."

5. Which reminds me... Grove squirrels.

Enough said.

6. TGITCF!

Thank God It's Trash Can Friday! Friday's in the fall are celebrated with red and blue garbage cans around campus and there's nothing more beautiful.

7. The Square is so much more than a town square.

The Square is the heart of our little college town and it pretty much defines Oxford, Missi. with its old-fashioned shops, bars, and restaurants. We love the Square.

8. The crossing guard makes our day.

If you haven't heard a crossing guard sing then you're at the wrong college. He actually makes your day a lot better as you trudge to class.

9. Alarm Wednesdays.

If you think you're going to enjoy a relaxing lunch outside on a Wednesday, you're wrong because that's when the school has decided to test every single alarm system we have. Nothing like getting over the hill with your ears ringing for 10 minutes straight.

10. Our tailgates are the best.

There's a reason why we are considered the number one tailgating school in the country. It takes true dedication to get up at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning to get ready for a football game that doesn't even start until 5 p.m. We love football if you couldn't tell.

It's an understatement to say that we love our school so I think I'll just wrap this up by saying "Hotty Toddy!"

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
