10 Things No One Told You About College

If someone told me these before I went away I probably would have approached it a different way.

High school is completely different from college. You are free to do as you please. Your parents are not here helping you as you make your way to your profession. College is all about you and your path to adulthood.

1. Parties are fun...until they get busted

You do not want to be caught at a party especially if you are under age because those fines are not something you want to pay on top of college tuition.

2. You have to make the effort to show you care or your professor will not

Your professor does not care about your grades. Professors do not reach out to you. As an adult you need to reach out to them and show them you care enough to succeed.

3. Sports aren't everything

Most of us grew up doing the sports we are now continuing to do in college. However, sports are not everything. If you are falling behind while you are in a sport then it is probably for the better that you are not on the team anymore.

4. Work Study is a great outlet to make money

Federal Work Study will work with your schedule and give you money. You can put this money towards your tuition and even pocket the money as well.

5. Live by your syllabus

My college writing syllabus is practically my life. It outlines every day of my classes. I can find out what to read, what to write, what we are taking a quiz on, all in all my savior.

6. Get enough sleep

Going to an 8 AM running on no sleep is not healthy and chances are you are not going to pay attention. When you so things like that it is like you are trying to learn sitting in a bubble.

7. Save your money

It is amazing going out all the time and buying things but it is way worse being a broke college student.

8. You can skip a class or two, but DO NOT make it a habit

Missing classes is going to hurt you more than anything. There are no reviews so being in class and listening to the lectures is highly important.

9. PREPARE TO FAIL

Studying for classes is trial and error. You absolutely will fail and there is no harm in it you just need to pick yourself up and try again.

10. Freebie Friday

We have this and it is the best thing ever created. Last time we got a cactus! You never know what you can get until you go and look for yourself. Who doesn't love free things?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
