1. The music is good, maybe not as good as the first movie…but good.
Many people fell in love with the original Pitch Perfect soundtrack, because it was so unlike most movie soundtracks. So, this gave the sequel big, HUGE shoes to fill. However, since this film was just released, there are newer acapella versions of more up-to-date songs, which always pleases the audience.
2. There is a “Riff-off" scene again, similar to the original.
I don't know about you, but in the scene when the Treble Makers, High Notes, and Bellas all competed on impromptu acapella, I fell in love with Pitch Perfect to a whole new degree. Just thinking that anyone could possibly acapella on the spot kind of blew my mind. But no need to worry; there is a similar scene in the sequel that will excite you all over again.
3. Snoop Dogg makes an appearance.
The fact that Snoop Dogg was in an acapella movie is absolutely hilarious. His some-what stoned persona was up to par in this film. Although his scene was very brief, the random funniness of him being there added some humor to the movie.
4. Benji can sing…like, really sing.
Jesse's weird, awkward, and magic-producing roommate from the original Pitch Perfect has a much longer role in the sequel. And hey, the audience quickly learns during the beginning of the film that Benji has a set off pipes! Hitting the highest notes in a solo alongside Jesse, Benji's gawkiness is soon forgotten when we learn how talented of a singer he really is. He also is a hopeless romantic throughout the film, which of course, is completely and utterly sweet coming from his nervous, geeky character.
5. The plot is a little far-fetched.
Without completely giving it away, there is an acapella competition in which each country can send one team to compete. However, we are not entirely clear about if there could/would (should?) ever be such competition…or if other countries in the world are actually even interested in acapella at all.
6. Gale and John were honestly the funniest part of the whole movie.
Similar to the first film, the announcers, Gal and John, stole the show. Although Fat Amy is a crowd favorite, Gal and John's narrating of the acapella groups (although slightly racist and anti-feminist) was light-hearted, inappropriate, and completely necessary to the sequel as a whole.
7. The Treblemakers are BARELY in it.
Avid fans of the first Pitch Perfect can admit to loving the Treblemakers almost as much as they love the Bellas, especially due to the budding romance between Jesse and Becca. But, aside from an opening number and the unique “Riff-off", we hardly hear the Treblemakers sing at all during the sequel. Their swanky dance moves and man splits are truly missed.
8. There are a lot of prejudices acknowledged.
Whether this is a good or bad thing, we are not entirely sure. But if you're a ginger, black, Korean, Indian, American, part of the LGBST community, or a female, you're likely to both take a joke and laugh at yourself, or feel offended. Some of these slurs are in good fun, like when Fat Amy expresses to Chloe that she already has it bad enough as a ginger. But on the other hand, a joke about how the whole world hates America, or how Indians are taking all American jobs, may offend you. But, if you walk into the theater in good spirits, then you are likely to find these casual slurs funny and witty in the film.
9. There's girl power.
As lame as that may sound, there is an empowering element of feminism expressed throughout the entire film. There is a theme of progression during the movie, since no all-female acapella group has ever been so successful. The acapella group also represents the idea that all types of females can successfully come together: the “type A", the music producer, the new, quirky girl, a lesbian, and a variety of culturally diverse girls. And yet, they can still sing in perfect harmony. Seeing a non-cookie cutter group of girls is refreshing, and also a reformist perspective for girls.
10. For a sequel, it was much better than we usually anticipate.
Who could forget the outward failures that were known as the “Bring It On" or “Step Up" series, tarnished by the fact that the sequels to the original films...well, sucked. However, Pitch Perfect 2 will not leave any Pitch Perfect fan disappointed. There is a fresh, new spin on the original story line from the first film, with new conflict and new characters. Aca-awesome.
