12 Do's And Don'ts All New MTSU Students Should Know

You deserve the low-down

As I'm going into my fifth year here at Middle Tennessee State University (yes, I will be a fifth year senior), I like to think I know a little something about the way MTSU works. So I'd like to share a few tips with those of you newbies in order to save you some time and help you get the most out of your experience here at MTSU.

1. Do NOT try to figure out Peck Hall

I promise you will not get away without having at least one class in this building. I understand the walls are color coordinated to try and make it easier, but it is very rare that you will go out the same stair case you came in, just accept it. Pay attention wherever you come out or you gon' start walking the wrong direction and have to casually turn around like you just "changed your mind" where you were wanting to go.

2. Do visit the science building, more than once

I don't care if you do not have a single class in there, it's worth the tour. Because it's the most expensive, dankest maze of a building you will ever experience. That and pretty much all of us older students' tuition money went towards building it, so you're welcome.

3. Do accept that you will spend money on food

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I said to myself "I won't be there long, I won't need food". Even if you're only there for one class, the smells coming from the many tempting buildings with food will be irresistible. You're young, let yourself splurge a little.

4. Do learn to live with the construction, because it never ends

That's what you get for choosing a school that is always making "improvements".

5. Do explore every floor of the library

Don't be like me and fail to notice the fourth floor until half way through your college career. It is in fact, the quietest floor.

6. Do not ignore the Rec Center

Seriously, if you have ever in your life thought "I need to get in shape", this is the place to make those dreams come true. With the weight room, track, rock wall, pool, cardio room, as well as the fitness classes, there are endless possibilities. Even if you want nothing to do with fitness, check it out anyways, I promise you won't regret it.

7. Do be careful who you kiss on the KOM steps

Rumor has it whoever kisses on those steps will be together forever...whether you're superstitious or not, this is not the place to take your weekend floozy. Some of you may be thinking: "challenge accepted", but don't say I didn't warn you.

8. Do not fear your professors

Take it from someone who avoided all contact with professors as much as possible for most of my college career. They really can help, and 99 percent of the time they are more than willing. Once you take the first step you'll realize a lot of them are hilarious. Just remember that they were in your shoes at one time too. Also, it is very important to note that although many professors may have foreign accents, it does not mean they have foreign feelings.

9. Do not ride your bike on campus..

Although some may be offended by this one, no one likes "that guy". I understand it's faster, but there's truly not enough room on the sidewalks. Be the bigger person, help minimize the possible bicycle fatalities.

10. Do pretend like 8 a.m.'s don't exist

I don't care how early you've gotten up for high school or work in the past, college is different. You now have the option to go to class, and no one is calling you or your parents if you don't show up. Your alarm will go off, you'll have a 30 second conversation with yourself on "do I really HAVE to go?", and you will nine times out of 10 determine you don't, then peacefully go back to sleep. Do yourself a favor and avoid 8 a.m.'s at all cost.

11. Do not fall for the convenience of the bookstore

I guarantee you can order every single textbook on Amazon for much cheaper. Not to mention the fact that it's almost impossible to leave without buying some sort of overpriced merchandise because you're instantly convinced you need more school spirit.

12. Do put your creative mind to use and write for Odyssey!

College is all about getting involved and expressing yourself. Join some clubs, look into Greek life, and if you haven't heard of it before, check out all the creative minds that are creating here at Odyssey. Every single person has such a unique voice and perspective that deserves to be heard! For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
